Yeah those sub $100 kit days are looooooong gone bud.
They're only going to continue to get more expensive.

As far as 7.62x30 brass, I'm good on $15-$20+tax for a box of 20 brass rounds. That is the main reason I won't purchase a Mini-30. That rifle is notorious for not liking cheap steel cased ammo. I couldn't afford to plink if I only had to buy brass cased 7.62x39.

I have a Romanian Century WASR 10. Big fan of the gun and no issues after 1k rds, I know that isn't a huge amount, just don't get much range time with all 80000000000000 hobbies

I haven't bought 7.62x39 since 2008, back when it was, you guessed it, $99 a case shipped to your door. I may have stockpiled a little. :gossip:

Thats what I did with 5.45x39, when it was 125.00 for 2k rounds of 7n6. I may have bought around 10k rounds back then.

I've built ARs before, it's really easy. Never really thought about getting an AK kit. I guess my biggest concern is how to get the barrel on. See, now I'm thinking I want to build an AK, thanks!

If you decide to put one together I would suggest finding some like minded people in your area and have a build party. These were more common about ten years ago, when kits were dirt cheap. This way maybe someone else has all the tools you will need, and the experience to do it right. Putting together a good AK is not an easy thing.

I wish. I can hardly even find people to shoot with me, let alone build something. Most of my friends can't even change a flat tire, it's pitiful.

Still would be a fun project. Gonna have to see what kinda tools I need.

Or, plan a trip to Vegas and attend an AK building class with the maestro himself, Jim Fuller of Rifle Dynamics. I've known Jim since he was mating ROMY-G kits to flats in his garage. He's come a long way. IIRC he was a doctor when he started building AKs as a hobby...

I think I got banned from there back in '07 or '08. It was around the time I SBR'd my Draco pistol or when I had my PSL chopped by Red Jacket. It's hard to remember.

As long as you have the right tooling, populating a barrel isn't that big a deal. You don't necessarily need to attend a build party or visit Jim Fuller to learn to build an AK, but I would suggest informing yourself as much as possible. Watch and rewatch as many youtube vids as you can and join, in addition to the above mentioned TheAKForum, the AKFiles. There are tons of highly skilled machinist that are AK enthusiasts and will answer very willingly any questions you might have.

It's all a matter of how much passion I suppose you have for AKs. Part's kits aren't getting any cheaper and if you can't build your own tools, the tooling is pricey. If you decide this is for you, than it's more like an investment, as the tooling will definitely pay for itself.

Feel free to PM me and I can elaborate more on my experience.

Okay, I’ll play. I have a couple. The right one is a select fire Polish Tantel in 5.45 and the leftis a Century SBR in 7.62. They are cool enough I guess but wildly inaccurate. Not really a fan, AK’s are not as great as everyone says. If I am ever shot at I hope that it is coming from an AK, I’ll be pretty safe

Not trying to start a debate as It's too early for a pissing contest, but any SBR is going to be inaccurate compared to a full length barreled rifle of any kind.

I have a Bulgarian 74 that I built myself and is spot on at 100 yards. I'd suggest taking a look at your sights on the Tantal and make sure they're not canted.

Maybe you should actually do a little research. Kirkham was a Green Beret for 28 years. The first time I met Dick Marcinko he was in his 60's and out of shape. That doesn't discount his previous achievements or his knowledge.

You get velocity from barrel length not accuracy. I have a 10.5" 5.56 that is as accurate at a 20"
