My brother ( who is more of an AK nut than me) had a Golani, didn't have many issues with it, and it looks like that model is one of the few that the Century Monkeys didn't screw up too bad.

I've thought about getting a Galeo barreled receiver and just building my own, but I don't know how to do that. Welding is like alchemy to me. Dunno how to do it. I've built ARs with no problems, and even built my UZI from a fully welded up receiver, but it's had some teething issues.

2011 or so I converted a Saiga sporter to make a compliant AK variant. Furniture done in water soluble wood dye, coated and waxed. Trigger and such done by a buddy. Runs flawlessly. It had a canted sight out of the box which pissed me off royally. Ya think the russkies would not have this issue with a sporter, and it really made the test paper in the box a complete joke. I changed the rear sight. Accurate and precise as any AK now.

under 1k already sorted or 1k to acquire then you massage the thing with money as time goes on???

one option would be if you can get your hands on a izhmash saiga sporter in original form, then you would have a clean slate to convert it however you see fit

but one of those could cost 600-900 before the conversion....

gonna be tough finding a good one for under $1k right now. KR103 is good from what I could tell but my first was a Yugo M70. Love my Yugo and the Tiger maple wood is a stunner when it’s on.

other than that I would honestly buy a Sam7 either side folder or fixed stock. They’re made 100 times better but you gotta watch for Paint finish. Arsenal is definitely not know for their paint QC.

Rob Ski and Klayco47 on YouTube are great guys to tell you about aks. Rob does 5000 round testing on AKs to prove them out.

one thing is never and I mean never buy a VSKA unless you want to die from a cast trunnion exploding in your face. Mini dracos from century too. They’re just vska cut down.

I love me a good Saiga! Traded my unconverted 545 for a Vepr.

Eggplant, plum. As long as it’s got fleck you can call it whatever

any reason why no PSA? Their newer products are pretty good.

You also didn't mention what caliber, I'm assuming 7.62x39. I'd try to find a Yugo, but be prepared if you want to do mods, they definitely do not use some of the same parts as other AKs.

Don't be afraid to buy used if it is a good rifle (I mean a non-Century product mainly)

I'm kinda flexible there...if I need to add/adjust parts down the road I'm ok with that but I'd like it to function reasonably well out of the box

I did know to steer clear of anything VSKA but I like the idea of new or freshly importedthat I can get thru my distribution chains

Because PSA can suck it. I won't get into it but I will not give them a dime. Even buying their guns used. Won't do it.

Can't go wrong with a Yugo or a SAM7. A good sam7sf with bakelite Handguards and plum grip is my new build quest
