Did you set timing? The marks on the cams and crank pulley? Did you buy yours assembled? After you set TDC and got the pulleys timed to crank, you rotated crank a couple times to make sure timing marks were still good? You can be off 180, but you wouldn't know until you spun the crank a couple times when assembled. But you can check it now. What has to come off on the 3RZ to check the timing marks?

10 days later I finally got around to finishing this leg of the journey. Thank you so much for all your help, in the end it was my own stupidity that was the major hang up, a plug from the harness that goes behind the glove box had a black plastic cam lock and I pushed the plug in but neglected to flip the lock so it wasn't fully engaged... plugged it in and boom! Fired right up

Then had issues with it sputtering and wanting to die on take off. Got a misfire in cylinder one code, swapped the pink knockoff injectors back to the stock browns and all is right with the world:D

I know this is late, I just finnished my first ever rebuild on my 3rz. I turned it on. I havent done anything super special other than getting it up to temp, and driving it. I HAVE NO TAC so i may have gone over 3k rpms, and ive driven on the free way every day at somewhat a steady pace and ive definitely let it idle for long periods of time... have i totally effed my engine? Or is it fine. I just did the first break in oil change at 674 miles. It was dark and glittery. But i think it stopped burnin oil. And it seems to run totally fine, ive offroaded in it already too maybe 40 miles ago. Give or take. Do I also need to adjust the stupide shims? Or leave em and I assembled the timing chain so do i have to figure out timing?

I have run conventional oil and changed it at @500 miles and cut the oil filter open to look... oil and a filter are cheap, anyway, I run conventional oil until oil consumption ends. On my 4.0 SOHC Ranger it was apx. 10k miles before oil consumption stopped. In a side note, I switched to Pensoil pure synthetic on my 98 Tacoma 3.4. I was consuming a qt every 1000 miles. On "high mileage" dino oil, no oil consumption to speak of... 1 qt @2.5k miles.
