I just bought a 2004 Tacoma and was thinking swapping in some LED dash lights would be a cheap first project. I was planning on swapping my dash lights over the long weekend. Started reading the first pages of this thread and it seemed like it was just choose color, take the dash apart and change lights. As I kept reading the "simple" process kept getting more and more complicated. Have I missed something? Think Ill wait until some of the dash lights start to burn out.

It is not hard at all. I just did it on my 99'. It really is just removing some screws and bolts all pulling off the plastics. The bulbs just twist out and you twist new ones in. There are videos on you tube that really showed me how simple it is.

Question? - I want to put new bulbs in my third brake light. When I opened it up there where no bulbs in there. Do I replace with red or white led's? Also Is the third brake light supposed to stay on with the headlights or just turn on when you step on the brake?

Just an update for anyone with this issue
Turns out the trailer light harness the previous owner install was about as ghetto as it can get. cut all of his crap out and re-did all of the wiring under the bed going where he messed with it all the way to the tail lights. Bad ground was the problem and My dash/blinker issues have since been fixed. Thanks RysluM

if lens is red use white bulbs

it only lights up when brake is applied

some 3rd brake lights have white bulbs for lighting up the cargo area via a light switch on the dash but I don't think we have those.

you should have conventional bulbs in it , if not then someone has replaced the oem light with after market stuff

I removed the red lens and there where no bulbs in there. So I was thinking to replace with 194 leds. I do not have the switch for the cargo area. I believe it to be the stick third brake light assembly. So you recommend white color instead of red led's?

So I noticed a issue yesterday with my replaced 194 led's in my cluster. They are starting to blink on and off? Each light seems to be doing it. I have 4 installed in there. They are blinking at random times not in sync. My thoughts...just fualty lights? Or the new led's have a loose connection in the stock sockets? They worked fine for about two weeks and now I'm having this issue. Anybody ever had this same issue?

Because you will barely see a red LED in a red covered assembly.

I put red LED in my brakes and 3rd brake light. Very visible, lights up the night behind the truck

Doing my dash lights and my four-wheel-drive switch tomorrow afternoon. Really curious if anyone has any tips or tricks to change the colors of the climate controls, steering wheel buttons, and all of my factory switches (Traction control, rear locker etc)

I want to do a full transition, not just have LEDs in somethings and other things still be factory

what I kinda do is go by how thick and transparent it is, if its not that thick then the red colored bulbs will shine through it much better but if its thick the red will be much dimmer then the white bulb. this can be a personal "look" judgement call if you like it to be redder but ok with it not being as bright since it is just an extra light and not the main brake lights.

in most cases you only use red bulbs in clear or "smoked" colored lenses

I did my dash lights today. I got the 4runner hvac panel. I didnt like the way the center control looked with a green bulb in there so for now i just put the stock bulb back in there. i'll need to order a white bulb for that spot. Before I sold my 1999 Tacoma I swapped clocks.

Disagree. Most LED sellers like VLEDS and SB say to use the same color as the application. I have red bulbs in my brake lamps and they light up just fine. With a white LED it will wash out the red color of the lens.

Does anybody know of a writeup for disabling the error check function for the interior lights and maybe headlights? I thought I remember seeing one. Something like removing or modifying a relay or circuit.
    TIA

Can anyone tell me which year 4runners had the white HVAC faceplate?
