looks great but now we just gotta figure out how to change that orange clock, is it just me or is it equally as hard to see it in the day as it is at night?

they should have stuck to the green clocks, those were easy to see unlike these orange things. im actually considering getting rid of the clock altogether because of it plus it seams to be blocked from view by the steering wheel no matter how I adjust the tilt for it and if I have to look around the steering wheel to see it, its not conveniently located IMHO. this is strange to me because in my 99 I had a clear unobstructed view of the clock all the time so something changed with the 01-04 to reposition the driver.

Shouldn't be an issue on your 96 only 01-04s needed resistors

    ok guys, major malfunction here.

got the blue instrument lights in with no problems so that's done but when got the climate control out I found out the color is caused by an orange paint or film over on top of the white paint and since I didn't carefully read this whole thread I missed this:
and I to tried to remove it and sure enough, I ruined the panel because all the paint comes off if you try to scrape it not just the orange, or it leaves lines and splotches in the spots you might get sorta cleaned off.

01-04s are like that. You can try to scrape it if you want but usually people mess up haha but you can order some 4Runner AC panel that's the same but clear instead of orange

well I started scraping the orange off and its a big mess now so I need to get another cover plate now and I since I don't see any cheap used ones, I bought a brand new one for $35 but its not the first time I learned an expensive lesson. wish I had read the whole thread more carefully to know ahead of time I needed to just buy a 4runner panel from the beginning, then I could have been searching the salvage yards for one. now I got a dash all in pieces and have to wait on parts to arrive lol.

also they discontinued the 4runner part number 55519-35350 and now they only use the part number 55519-35360 which I hope is still the white one. if this new one has the orange on it then it will just have to stay with that orange crap on it.

the hvac lights I got are something called "ice blue" which is a very light sky blue color but they do shine through the orange better ten the stock bulbs to make the hvac symbols look a dimmer looking light orange color light an old faded white plastic. if I had just waited to see how it looks at night.

since I ordered the new panel I ordered some actual "blue" LEDs this time for it.

FYI tip - I found removing the circuit board (just 4 little screws) is a lot easier then trying to fiddle with getting that hidden bulb in.

I did have to swap out the sockets on them but that was pretty easy to do. so maybe if I figure out what color bulb shines through the orange to make a better color?

The runner isn't the whole thing it's just the face plate

I know, that's all I bought was the face plate, the whole control is like $250

but I wouldn't be surprised if the control wasn't the same as well because everything with it is identical as far as the plug and mounting holes

ALL 4Runner AC plates are now orange. they no longer make the white/clear version. The part has been defaulted to the Tacoma one.

If you scour eBay or a parts 4Runner (without digital climate) you may be able to find one that's not orange.

also the bulb in the shifter is a 74 and if you want just take off the orange condom and see how it looks. should be a softer glow.

and yes both the map lights and overhead need a resistor in the 01-04 to operate without ACC or a standard bulb on (it flickers)

well it seams the brighter LED lights show less orange looking then stock bulbs so I might keep them if the new panel is orange like the old one. if I recall art class correctly, red and blue makes green so blue and orange should also make some version of a green color I think, I will find out soon enough lol.

the shifter bulb had an amber like condom, almost yellow, but maybe it was orange and just faded out. both it and the ash tray are burnt out so I have to replace them.

I have no glove box light or even a plug for one so it will stay without a light, after all you never really use it anyway and if you need to see that's what the dome light is for.

I wish the OP would add a big disclaimer in the first post saying people with 01-04 tacomas to leave the hvac lights alone when they do the dash mod because of the orange paint thing on the cover panel.

ya ours didn't have a glove box light option. the ash tray should also be a 74. I believe I bought 5 of them when I ordered to get the ash tray, shifter, key ring mod, and two courtesy light (have to wire these yet).

For what it's worth i just went to a toyota junkyard in rancho cordova (Sacramento for non locals) and bought a 4runner plate. Made sure it was white and fit, then gave the man $20. It works fine. Had to radius the corners a bit to make a better fit, bit im happy.

well I bought one that says its for the 01-02 4runner which is the white one http://parts.larryhmillertoyota.com/oe-toyota/5551935350

but I wont know for sure until I get it if its really the white one or not because that part number 55519-35350 also shows as the 01-04 Tacoma part which has the orange on it

55519-35360 is the original I believe (white one) but all replaced by the 35350 (orange) on every site (I googled 55519-35360 and hit all the parts sites)

Im confused on what plate your talking about, I got a 04 with AC controls and I don't remember any issues with orange color. Mine come threw bright as hell blue. Only part that's only dimmer is the Knobs are orange colored a little.
