So I am 28 and in good fincial shape. I have a very good amount in savings, everything is paid off. I am marrying a girl who has 11k owed on a car and 30k owed in college debt. She is still in school going for a BSN after her BS. Has anyone delt with this. I hate not being able to save or spend as I want. I have thought of just paying off the loans but I do not want to loose my nest egg. So any experiance would be cool to hear from

do not pay off her loans IMO. cause what happens is something happens between the 2 of you?
and something good to start off with in a relationship is free spending, as long as you make your own money, spend it as you will. thats how me and my gf do it, and we have never had an argument about financial situations.

It doesn't sound like she's got bad debt, like credit cards piling up or anything. That's a relatively modest auto loan and not terrible on the student loan side either as long as she plans on getting a job that will allow her to make the payments. My fiance has more debt than I do, and is similar to your girl's situation. I own my truck, have very minimal student loans and she went for her Master's degree so she's got more in loans than I do. For me, as long as she's responsible with her money, it doesn't bother me. If she had credit card debt racked up and was very irresponsible with her money, I don't think it would work out with us. Money can be the root of a LOT of arguments so make sure you two can at least talk about it.

When I married my wife had JUST gone through a BK and she also just graduated with a nursing degree. We took on her debt and loand and are doing just fine. She makes great money where she works as a R.N. and I do very well as an overseas contractor. Point is if you love the woman and you are going to be together, you have to fight the good fight together!! I knew my fiancee (soon to be wife) had just gone through BK and I had good credit, that never crossed my mind when the time came!

    Too many to list now.
This thread should be called "the thread of people who want to out their spouse and make her very angry when she finds it"

    Not playing this game. :)

Haha but I dunno, it all comes down to "is it worth it?" and that's something only you can weigh. I know that for my wife and I we both had a small amount of debt coming into marriage but we weren't getting married for the financial benefits. We WANTED to be with each other, for richer or for poorer. IMO it shouldn't matter all THAT much. Should it be discussed? Yeah. Should you have a plan? Yeah. Should it be a deal breaker? ehhhh I don't know about that.

IMO, and this is just ME. But I would HELP her pay it off if I was seriously looking to build a future with her. But the key thing though is I would NOT use savings to do it. I would hold off on saving any extra and keep that egg in tact, and just take all the extra I could anf put toward that debt. Just my 2 cents worth. Good luck!

In NO way is it a deal breaker. In the grand skeme of things it is a modest debt but debt none the less. She has no CC debt. I was always raised never to fianace her family does. Looks like we need to sit down and talk a little more to get on the same page

$30K in loans is very small compared to the earnings potential of BSN. don't worry about it. if they are federal loans the rate, while not awesome, probably is not too bad. since she is on the promissory note you are not on the hook if things don't work out...unless a pretty badass lawyer gets involved.

i deal in student loans all day and see outrageous amounts ($200K+) for social work and English degrees. i try to give advice but it's kind of too late at this point and they don't really want to listen anyway.

Credit companies say that student loan debt is the best debt you can carry. If payments are being made and up to date I see no issues with that much debt. It actually helps your credit score. Also that debt was brought into the relationship, you do not inherit that debt in case of a divorce.

My wife married into my student loan. And she's fine with helping to pay it odd since she claims it as "her debt" now too.

My wifes student loans are almost 20K and I think we pay 107 a month on one and like 96 or something on the other one...the third one I think her mother picked up??
But don't worry about paying them all off at the same time man. Hell being either a BSN or a RN if she goes to work for any federal job they will pay up to 10K a year for three years on student loans. That is how my wife is paying hers down. She works at an Army hospital as a GS11.

    smart question OP..

you two will do fine. we had the "debt" talk early..laid it out on the table. we were both in good shape, and just dove in.

That's the key, you have to talk about it. If you get married, combine your finances THEN figure out you're worlds apart, it will just be a constant battle. You have to talk about finances beforehand to make sure you're not going to drive each other crazy!
