It's a "Port" option (not factory)... My port's (Houston, TX) part# is 8061A (at a cost of $62)... I'd bet other ports shoudld offer it as well - Just ask you dealer's Parts Dept to order it from the "Port" parts list.

You're exactly right on that... For Tacoma's, it's a "Port" option.

For example, it's an option available to me in the Texas area, if I build a Tacoma at the Toyota web-site (at the "Build and Price your Toyota" link).

Thanks for taking the time to do that. Yep, it looks as best I can remember mine. I'll double check it when I head out of work in a few minutes.

hookem, does phantom's photo look like yours?

I bought mine in Texas too, so I'm betting we got the same thing.

After considering the Toyota tailgate lock (Port option), I decided to go with the power-version of the Pop & Lock instead (Part# PL8520 - $79)...So I use my key-less entry keypad to operate the tailgate (which is connected to the passenger-side door wires) - I find that much more convenient than using a key.

Good information! Does it use the same key as the door/ignition, or a different one? I might order one.... Then again all someone would have to do to get in is slash the canopy... But I suppose it would be a deterant and keep "honest" people honest.

Unfortunately, it uses its own, much smaller, key (which was another reason I decided to go the "power lock" route).

thanks. makes me wonder if it's just a port installed pop n lock.... with the sticker removed. pop n locks have their key number on the front somewhere too so someone can just look and see what key is needed.

Like mentioned earlier, a spare tire lock is probably also a good idea.

I'm 99% certain that's what the "port" lock is. There's a 4 digit number on the keyhole that matches the one on my key.

lmao Toyota designs a lock for the Tundra's tailgate, and then buys a cheap aftermarket one to install on the Tacoma.

Yeah, that 4 digit number is the key number. From what I've heard there's only 6 different ones. Not real secure, IMO. I know nothing will stop a determined thief, but damn! Why make it easier on them? All they'd have to do is buy/steal the 6 keys and open it up like they own it. Or get 1 and have a 1 in 6 chance of it working. lol

Anyway, I guess I'm just glad I didn't have it locked during the winter. I'd be breaking into my own tailgate.

quick and easy mod. I like mine. It keeps the honest people honest. There's nothing you can do to stop the dishonest if they really want it.

Hey, hookem, do you have more info on other "port" options? My Tacoma also came with a Homelink mirror and wheel locks. I'd be curious to find out if/which aftermarket version they correspond to.

Frankly, I haven't a clue (i.e., I've not done any research along those lines).
I guess "Google" could help you 'tying the lose ends' on that story?

I found out a bit of interesting information when I went to ask about my truck last night. Toyota owns the distribution companies all over the U.S.A. EXCEPT for Gulf States Toyota and South East Toyota. These two distributors will put anything on your truck if you pay them enough. Problem is: they put cheap parts on. Apparently the rims I have on my Tacoma are aftermarket (not Toyota), and that is why they are so hard to balance.

That being said, I don't understand why the Tundra comes with a locking tailgate, and the Tacoma does not. :(

I don't understand why the Tundra comes with a bed light and the Tacoma doesn't!

And it's not like it could be a price/package/model issue as damn near every OTHER truck as one...

Then again, I don't understand why they put crap tires on a truck bought in February, in upstate NY, in the snowbelt..... Are they TRYING to increase bodyshop business?

Since my plan included in the mid future (now is reality) a Cap for the truck, one of my first mods was the manual Pop & Lock, as of most of us I installed my self with no problems, as theft deterrant for my tailgate it is working, and on my cap I requested an upgrade: automatic lock, by this way everything inside my bed truck will be safer, You should look for part PL5220, POP & LOCK has done a Lock for the compartment (big one) in the bed. Another option to make your belongies safer.

    Regards.

Good to know since that includes me. Of course, anybody who can't put a Pop n Lock on themselves should drive a Yugo instead.
