Bought my taco in '05 with 60% down and paid the balance off in 1 year.

IMO I'd rather ride the bus or pedal my bike than make a car payment. Both my vehicles are paid off and I don't use credit cards. I've had a job since my Freshman year in high school, often two at a time (I'm 29 now). It took me a lot of hard work to get to this point and I will never go back to the widely accepted system of modern slavery in this country that is credit. Credit for cars, credit for nice clothes, credit for toys to keep up with the 30K Joe Millionaires, credit for food and other daily purchases. The only loan I'll consider in the future is for a house.

BTW nobody seems to mention that when you buy a car you often can get either 0% interest or cash back. For example, Toyota recently was offering 0% interest on a Tundra or $2,000 cash back. Sure, zero interest is smart because it beats inflation, but that doesn't mean you are paying nothing by choosing the 0% interest option; you're really paying the opportunity cost of $2,000 upfront for receiving the loan. Consumer auto loans carry risk, so the cost of risk and financing is just tacked onto the vehicle's purchase price.

Last time I checked, high-yield savings accounts like ING are only paying 1% interest, so if you were to retain the down payment in a savings account you'd still lose money. There's no such thing as a free lunch!

Posted the last payment online yesterday evening! It's still pending, but Monday or Tuesday when it clears I guess it's officially ours! Feels good...

Got it on May 20th of '08. It's a 2008 with 14k-ish miles. So it took about 29 months to pay off (is my math right?)

Bought a 2005 Prerunner in Feb. 2009. Paid half of it upfront, paid the other half on my first payment after I filed my taxes and got the first time homeowner's tax credit. Seemed to make better sense to pay it off then to put the money in the bank and earn a lower interest rate on it than what I was paying off on the truck finance loan...

Paid off a few years ago. I won't mod it until it's paid off otherwise you're modding for the bank. Now it's time to put everything on it.
