GS-13 is equal to about an O-5 in military = http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Schedule#Military_rank_equivalency
    GS-13 in Atlanta pays about $85,000.00 to $110,000.00 = http://govcentral.monster.com/gover...ality-atlanta-sandy-springs-gainesville-ga-al

    (Thinking now)
If you get out of HS at 18 y/o .... Out of 4 year university at 22 y/o w/ a BA or a BS .... Out of school with a Masters at 24 y/o.

This gives you very little if any time to go up in GS ratings, so you have to be hired in as a GS-13 ??

Getting a GS-13 at 24 y/o or 26 y/o is a super deal then ... but where do you go in the next 20 years ??

I see the following scenario play out a lot in organizations I've been in:

age 22 - graduate with engineering / computer science degree and start intern program at GS-7
    22 & 6mo - automatic early promotion to GS-9
23 - automatic promotion to GS-11 (exit intern program)
    24 - competitive promotion to GS-12
    25 - competitive promotion to GS-13

I haven't seen many hired in at GS-13 (even with a masters) unless they had prior military service. But then, there's a lot of "in-sourcing" going on nowadays so it may be easier than it once was.

    .

    Thanks for an explanation ...

Wow, that is fast compared to the "old days". I co-oped with USA-Corps/Engrs. (summers) when I was taking civil engr. and a GS-13 was a big dog back then and it took years to get there too.

I was lucky in the military. Started out as E-1 to E-4, then O-1 to O-2 and got out on a medical.

Joined USNR at 17 y/o. Several years later while in college on an student deferment, I was called on active duty because I was a corpsman. Was transferred to FMF WESPAC USMC.

Because I already had my fixed wing, the USMC offered me a deal for a transfer & extension (more training & school) and a slot at rotary wing.

Later, went to RVN, lost 2 aircraft (not pilot error), got banged up & broke my back, spent some time in Bethesda Naval Hosp. and got out on a medical with a small disability compensation.

Post military, worked & travelled as a civilian private contractor for govt. until a few years ago.

Then VA upgraded disability to full disability and I retired.

What started out kinda of rough in the military ... ended up OK ... but I was very lucky pup all my life too. ... :D

PS ... Now I try to help (as a volunteer) some of the other guys with their claims for compensation & medical care.

Semper Fi brotha....I was infantry in the RVN and just went over 33 years of svc with the Army. USMC said I was to old to fly when I tried coming back in after a 6 year break in svc.

It is VERY possible. So someone with a similar background as mine and with a masters could probably be hired as a 13. At 22 I was hired as an 11, step 9 and I've since worked my way up. I'm 29 now though.... And P.S. I don't have a 4-yr degree yet - haven't needed it yet - but I do have a very specialized background. But I'll be working on it more this year.

    Yep.

Just voted... I did 3 Years back in the late 90's. Left as an E4 in the Army. I cannot believe there are so many 0-5's here...

That is a fast track from the old GS system that I knew, when I was working at the USA Corps/Engrs. and going to college. I have 3 buddies that are top dogs in USA Corps/Engrs and are retiring soon and will do very well in retirement.

IMO ... for you younger people, it will be great to retire from a GS rating and get a stable retirement, unlike corporate retirements of today.

I was lucky that I saved in my civilian job & invested wisely and also got the VA disability raised. The tax bennies from VA money (federal, state & county) are great. It saves me about $5,000 a year on my house taxes alone (from county), get free tags (no ad valorem vehicle taxes) in GA and pay no fed or local taxes on VA comp.

If you have a chance to double, triple or quadruple dip (military, GS, GG, SSA, Corp) ... I would plan my life around that.

I admire you younger guys (I am 63) for your grit and determination. Plan for the future well .... as it will come sooner than you realize.

Change of the subject for a second .... When you are out in a store or any where for that matter ... just look around and think about who will really be able to take care of themselves in their retirement years. I am sad to say that probably not many as today. Plan for your future now.

So much for my rambling and typos ... Happy New Year & Semper Fi .... :D

Thanks man and Semper Fi to you as well... It is a bit of a fast track, but with 60% of the workforce retiring over the past 4 years and this one upcoming - someone had to fill the shoes... and I wasn't going to let the opportunity slip by... Knock on wood - by time I retire - I should have been a SES for at least 5-10 years.

It also depends on your region and organization. Being near DC makes for almost endless opportunity while some places make it tough to crack past the GS-12 level.

Unless you're in FERS and looking at a TSP that's flat-lined over the past 10 years. "Buy and hold" my ass.

I fast tracked in the Corps too... Picked up E-5 (from E-1) at the end of my 2nd year via two meritorious promotions in a closed for promotions MOS. Earned E-5 when the closed MOS opened for a single month... I had all my education shit done, rifle expert, 300 PFT, etc. I'd say I was 80% hardwork, 20% luck.
