Does anyone know how the rear brakes in a 2nd gen Tacoma self adjust. I want to know if the Service writer told me the truth.

Most systems adjust during normal driving when you apply the brakes while moving in reverse.
Some systems adjust during application of the parking brake.

AFAIK, the Tacoma adjusts during normal braking in reverse.

You do NOT need to "get going in reverse and slam on the brakes"... the cam is only going to move one notch each time.

Actually they told me that all the adjustment is by applying the emergency brake on a regular basis. News to me. I never use it, guess I will now. Also keeps the cables lubed they said.

Many years ago they put self adjusters on every drum brake the ideal was to adjust them enough to keep the pistons from coming out of the cylinders from lack of adjustment that is about all they do. Using the brakes in general will adjust them as long as there is enough movement of the shoes. Yes using the parking brake will take up the slack too.
