Or now that the thin veneer of paint has been scraped you can think about the years of rusty frame rot ahead.

Indeed, there's what building up your truck actually costs and what you tell your wife you spent.

Not an ounce of worry there. A squirt of paint and life is good.

The cross over pipe did touch, liquid mud / no scrape. That will need modding.

    50k!

I'd be interested to see a price breakdown. That's a lot of money! Mine is just as modified and I bet I'm half that or less. Well I don't have the shell.

If you subtract out $14.4k for the camper shell . . . . . well, it still doesn't add completely up.

Probably 1/3 or so is installation costs added as mod money?

    I'm over 10k now.

    $500 for snorkel
    $900 sliders
    $7800 lift
    $750 skids
    $2800 wheels/tires

$12,750 so far give or take. Doesn't count recovery gear that I've recently bought as well.

I'm in Canada though so our prices are higher. Also have 5 wheels and tires. and fox 2.5 extended travel all around with Total Chaos UCA

But hey I do make use all of it so meh.

I must have missed it. You provided a price list for the average third gen owner. Then a parts list for the 50k. I don't see where you posted a price breakdown of the 50k.

    I call BS.

The average guy spending 10g in parts might have checked off the majority of your list but that is nowhere the same as the average guy is spending 10g on the things on your list.

We have guys cheaping out and getting generic rubber mats instead of the super reasonably priced OEM bed mat. We have guys whining about prices on just about everything. Guys whine that you are wasting your money if you do oil changes more often than Toyota recommends.

Not everyone mods a brand new truck beyond the minor stuff. Maybe a scan gauge or the ESP brake controller mount or Hondo garage radio knobs. Many go rims for stock sized tires or more aggressive looking rubber in stock sizes. Still no where even close to 10 grand.

    There are a lot of things I could comment on with this, so I'll try to keep it brief;

If someone gets a kick out of pouring their money into a truck/ precision rifle/ camera gear/ motorcycle, etc., and seldom use it, who cares? It's their money to spend, not mine. Who am I to judge how they should make themselves happy?

You chose a poor example when you listed the GS. I, and most of my friends, ride GS's. Out of all of us, we have one guy who rides it like a Harley. The rest of us are not shy about long trips (several of us have done Saddlesore 1000's), riding in snow/ rain, forest service roads, etc. We don't all ride them around the world, if that is your definition of someone who correctly uses their motorcycle. But we do go on "adventures", and I don't mean Starbucks (although we certainly stop at them). The thing you have to remember about the GS is it's not a dirt bike. There was a famous ad BMW put out on posters a few years back of a GSA fully in the air. The backstory behind the photo was that the rider was a salesperson at a local dealership, and the GSA was totaled when it "landed" from the photo op. They didn't mention that in the ads.

In fact, of all expensive vehicle types you could think of, I'd guess that the GS riders who trick out their bikes, are by far the most likely to actually adventure with them, if we're going by percentages. When I see someone on a GS that has been modded, they always have stories to back up where they've been and places they've seen. I don't see that in the mall crawler world. I definitely don't see it in the sportbike or the cruiser world (if we're going by generalizations).

    A couple of my GS's:

    Well said

Pretty low IMO for a bunch of so called Toyota/Tacoma sit here for several pages bashing another's choices in taste and mods...and how they spend their money
