Top end rebuild kits don't seem that expensive. If I'm only doing it every 10-12k miles, I'm cool with that. Or did you mean 1.0-1.2k miles?

Plan on at the very least 700 bucks. You have to get the head machined and replace the valves most of the time.
look into the DRZ400SM, KTM690SMC, and Husky 610SM.

Love to. Can't afford/don't want to spend that much. This is going to be my commute to base/ride on the Corpus Christi beaches bike.

    no you.

A machine shop will do the head work. That is where most of the cost is. Then you gotta buy a piston, rings, valves, gaskets, hope the cylinder is good, etc.

I did. I bought it for $7k and sold it for $10.5. It was a Special Edition (1 in 165 in the US) so I knew I could get in and out quick.

I don't get too attached to motorcycles like I do my truck. Typically, as soon as I buy a bike I post it on craigslist for a high price. If someone bites, I typically sell.

I wouldn't street an MXer. To much maintenance and ill mannered for the street. Mine wants to be either full throttle or full brakes.
I have a CRF 450 sumo for the track and a DRZ for the street. 50hp kit on the DRZ makes it an awesome street (or track) ride. WRX 250 is a lot of fun too.
