Unless you're going to track it, either one of those bikes are poor choices in my opinion. These things are geared for a motocross track, riding any kind of highway/ 50mph+ speeds is going to be very uncomfortable. Now if it were a WR or a 450x, which are internally geared longer on top, they would make much better street commuters. Even with significant changes to your sprocket ratio, these are not good street bikes at all.

Also, being as you've only ridden some street bikes, I'd like to remind you that these bikes are KICK START ONLY. It gets to be a real pain in the ass, trust me i've still got an 02 WR426.

Get a newer WR450, or one of the KTMs that come street legal out of the box with e-start. The DRZ both 400 and the 650 are dogs. They're heavy as hell, and compared to the WR's and KTM's, feel very weak.

You're right, DRZ's are heavy and underpowered. The curb weight on mine is 301 pounds with a full tank of gas and my engine only puts out 36 horsepower. However, the SM is an extremely reliable transportation vehicle... and the engine is bulletproof. :)

OP, don't rule out a DRZ yet. I have a 2013 and i changed a few things. An exhaust, 3x3, and a jet kit make a big difference. This bike is a lot of fun. My opinion, the gearing is fine; if you don't like it, there are different sprockets out there. IMG_20130920_203853_120_zps5f6657aa_4618485b7fe7e34bb2672baadde901bd260fc05b.jpg
