Toyota partsman said whole controller ($863) has to be replaced because ac light doesn't work? I know I have to replace A/C compressor but AC still won't work if controller isn't replaced I'm told?

Without being there looking over the tech`s shoulder or holding their hand.

Who can say just what might be wrong

Bad AC amplifier which is more or less a circuit board that controls the AC getting the signals from the pressure switches tells the engine to idle up turn on the compressor .

If your good with the soldering Iron you might be able to rebuild it

Yes without the AC Amplifier the system will not work .
