With the altitude in CO I'd say a 450 minimum or a 350 with shorter gearing. Yamaha, KTM, Husqvarna. Mine is a 525 KTM which is more powerful and weighs less then most Asian-branded bikes. I weigh 255 without gear.

250 is possible but you'd have to gear it so short that it's top speed would be 45-50mph and you'll be shifting a lot on trails. The real goal is to be able to get the front end up to get over obstacles.

A good bike that's pretty cheap is a used Husqvarna TE 511; they only made them for a couple years and sell for cheap.

Since you are 200+lbs, I would say a 450 4-stroke is hard to beat. I used to ride a YZ125 2-stroke when I weighed 170 back in Texas at near sea level and it was ok but now weighing 230lbs and riding anywhere from 6-13k feet I need all the power I can get. It has plenty of torque to loft the front end over stuff and get you up the steepest hills without unnecessary wheel spin (unless you want that, then just roll on more throttle). I was worried about the weight of the YZ450F but it hasn't bothered me at all. As a bonus, a 4-stroke is harder to foul out at elevation from what I have found.

I had an Honda XR400 and I think that was perfect for the Mtn trails, had a 250 before that and it just wasn't enough. I also put a smaller front sprocket, basically just dropping 1 tooth and it really helped when you needed to go real slow over big rocks, it would just crawl.

I would have to look, 17/21 I think. They don't fit the DRz-SM, but I'll sell you them for $6900 and throw the bike in for free.. Lol I had a built DRZ before the WR, night and day. You should buy this one, you'll love it!!

Personally I wouldn't go with a 2-stroke. While it's certainly a good bike you can get almost as much performance with the 4-strokes. The older 2-strokes (pre 2011 or so) are also very top-end biased making them more high strung. If you plan on getting a 2-stroke an autoclutch might help but I don't really see the appeal of those either as I've had more then one friend have issues with their autoclutches. It's easier to get plates for 4-strokes too and due to the many many connectors between OHV trails that require a plate to ride legally; it makes more sense to me to get a 450-525 4-stroke that has a plate already. It's also fairly easy to plate a non-street legal built 4-stroke in CO assuming it has or someone's added the horn, headlight, brake light, mirror, and DOT tires so it can pass a 1-time inspection.

At 155 lbs a 300 is going to be a lot of power, but I think you'd get used to it eventually. Just keep your head about you for the first month or two of riding until you get used to it. Don't start off trying to keep up with people who might ride faster then you; go at your own pace and learn your bike and you'll be ok.

I'm not opposed to a thumper, I'm just more knowledge on working with a 2 stroke. I know on my little 125's there was no low end power, but from the research I've been doing it seems the big bore 2s (250/300) have a lot of low end grunt. Although I have no first hand knowledge of that. Never really thought about titling it, but I didn't know it was harder for the 2 strokes.

The new 300's have a lot of low-end grunt but the '05 is not among them from what I've read though it'd be more then the 125 of course.

Shit bolted onto other shit, and junk.
You should've taken mine out when you were in the Springs. My '12 300XC-W is ridiculous. The 300s are touted as three stroke because you can cheat them like a 4s and tractor through especially with the Wide Band tranny and stump pulling 1st gear.

Once I came back and started to doing more research on the ktm I realized that's what you had! Although I probably won't be looking at any quite as new as yours. Probably 2009 and older.
