I work primarily out of the spider guard. It's a great technique especially paired with the de la heva (not sure how to spell that). If anyone comes to the Houston area, let me know I train under Draculino, Brandon Mullins and Pedro Silva. Here, we focus on the spider guard alot. As for heavy guys, you have to constantly be moving because once you get pinned, you get stuck. Try to keep you hips free and shrimp out. Keeping your hips free is key. I keeps bigger guys off balance so they don't just plop down on you. Easier said than done.

    thank for the advice everyone!

Opinions on mouthgaurds for training? I already feel suffocated when a fat dude lays on me, how much more if I have a mouthguard

People say it helps you control breathing especially since im like a batouttahell when rolling.

I sure as hell wear one. Awkward at first and hindered my breathing but you get used to it and yea it sort of does help pace your breathing.

A fellow roller put a paper cutter on me one day and I clenched my teeth so hard I thought they were gonna break so I got one :)

When you fight and compete you will be wearing one, so in training always wear one. If you get an expensive one or even dentist fitted, they are pretty comfortable.

ProFormanceGuards.com. Mouthguards are the way to go. Mouthpieces can just get in the way.

I used to train at Guillobel BJJ in San Clemente, CA when I lived there. I miss that town, not the state

I have been learning some 10th Planet Jiu Jitzu stuff. I do wear a mouth-guard most of the time.

Just started bjj last month. Loving it and learning very quick. My first two rolls i got a rear naked and a leg triangle. Feels pretty good when you do that against someone whos been there longer than you. :)

Right on man! Youre gonna be hooked!

I dont have the right to talk, cause its been less than 6 months, but you cant think that way....i think one of the main points of BJJ is to have humility and humble yourself. Upper belts get caught by lower belts all the time. Vice versa, you cant get down on yourself if you get tapped by a lower belt.

And what im slowing learning is, its not all about the submission every roll, especially for whites. You gotta focus on just controlling your opponent in positions. Its not helping if you just "muscle" your subbs or just keep going for subbs all the time.

Little update on me. Either I gained some muscle or my body got used to it, but whenever fat mutha fckers sit on my chest Im not winded or gasping for air anymore. Feels like my ribs or thoracic cavity got stronger from all the big guys smashing on me.

Hey all, so I remember seeing this thread a long time ago (it's been awhile since I've been on here) and I've since taken up Judo, Muy Thai, and BJJ at a school affiliated with Team Pedro Sauer called Hybrid Martial Arts. I've been doing it for 8 months now and love it. There is a tournament in Richmond, VA this December through US Grappling. I will be competing in White Belts: Novice for Men's Gi, Men's No Gi, and Absolute for both. This will be my first tournament and I'm already very excited/nervous! I thought I'd try and restart this thread. Any advice for a first timer? Other than relax, and roll, roll, and keep rolling some more! Also, will any of you be attending/competing?

^Best of luck Cory. Make sure you hydrate the day before and just stay relaxed. Go over movements in your head and just take your opponent to the position you are best in. If you aren't good at take downs(one of my weakness) make sure you pull him into your guard and then start playing your game.

Thank you! I'll remember those things. Like you, takedowns are also a weakness of mine, but I have a couple throws I like. As far as being on the ground.....I really like side control. We'll see how it goes, win or lose it will be a great experience.

    How did the Tourney go???

Started back up in BJJ after my last school disbanded and also began Muay Thai to help me drop weight and get to comp weight.

This school (under Dan Camarillo and Ted Stobie) really has helped me up my game. Before I was always fighting for top because I had good control and a solid base but now I find myself preferring to pull guard and work the attack from my back :)

The tournament went well, I did okay for my first time. I placed 2nd in No Gi, and I didn't place in the absolute division or the Gi division. Two guys in my No Gi division rolled for 2 and a half hours. It was nuts. They stopped sweating after about an hour. I figured one of them would pass out, but finally one of the guys got an omoplata.

been going to North Sound BJJ/Judo for about a year and a half. Mostly go for Judo 3x a week but I try to make it to the BJJ class when I can (2-3 times a week).

We had a seminar with Joao Assis last weekend and he worked our butts off for 3 hours. It was intense but a lot of fun.

Congrats man, I love no gi. 2.5 hrs of rolling??? I would have died..
I think judo and bjj have good synergy when put together. Keep on training!
