Tacoma comes with a 2 inch hitch.. I was following a 3rd gen 4 runner..and notice a 1 1/4 tow hitch...any know the reason why? ...is it because of less towing weight or is Toyota going cheap?
    Aloha
    Hitch sizes..the norm ...is 1 1/4 , 2 inch and 2 1/2 inch..
I do have one homemade built trailer...2inch tow hitch ...wish I put a swivel hitch..
    With 32 inch tires...
    Aloha

Well, the current 4Runner is in it's 5th gen.
And, if you get the tow package on the 5th gen 4Runner, you get a 2" Class III Receiver.

You musta followed one with an aftermarket hitch.

Probably not a factory hitch receiver.

I think they still have a 2 inch receiver like Tacoma’s. Are you referring to the ball hitch? That’s entirely subjective based on what the 4rnr is pulling.

It depends on what the owner installed. My 1999 had a 2" reciever.

not everyone uses those small hitches for towing

sometimes people use the hitch simply for one of those extensions when carrying extra long items...
    long boards, kayaks etc.

We have a 2019 4Runner SR5, as base model as you can get, and it still has a 2" receiver.

It is smaller. It’s 2 metric inches on the 4Runner. Metric inches are smaller.

I am guessing from the local dealer ..looks factory ..because I see a lot with the 1 1/4..

Maybe dealer ask..want to add a hitch..? And the owners do not realize the difference?
    Aloha,

it looks funny to see a 1. 1/4 hitch in..outside is 2 inch open end..
