Yeah, I do the same thing to my dish water: I don't drain the sink for 10,000 washings or one year. Still works, but there's a lot of gross shit in the bottom of the sink that gets churned up when I wash dishes.

Consider that mental picture in your quiet moments, and let's see if you go 10K again.

There is a reason you change it at 5K: yes, it still lubricates, but its detergent ability is greatly diminished past that, completely gone by 10K. I have this on good account: Back in college I worked in Mobil's Blending and Packing plant in Beaumont Texas where Mobil 1 is made and shipped. To this day that plant also private labels many other oil company's dino and syn oils for them there. The base dino or synthetic product is the same among all of them. Only the type and amount of additives varies by each company's recipe. Working there gave me opportunity to attend product info meetings with sales reps from the various additive companies, and to speak informally with them in depth, mainly due to my racing efforts. The "oil", dino or syn, does some of the detergent work. Mostly though it's the additive's job to clean your engine, among many other jobs they do. The "oil" can go the mileages you cite, but the additives give out before that. That's straight from the additive rep's mouth, speaking about the products their companies engineer. SO...I am presented with the choice to believe them, or the brain trust on this forum.

I'll let my dish water go a year, but my rolling stock gets a high colonic at 5K.
