Is below 70 some kind of magical number? Once I was going 75 with my trailer through the Adirondacks at night. Suddenly three deer darted out and I missed them narrowly as they passed behind me at full gallop. Had I been going only sixty I'm convinced there would've been a nasty collision.

No. But most vehicles advise you not to tow above 60 MPH. It helps with slowing down and making sure the tail isn't wagging the dog, especially if you don't have proper tongue weight or are near or over capacity. It also saves strain on the engine. Remember, modern tow ratings are based on safely towing and often include a number of factors to achieve the rating such as trailer brakes, proper speed, etc.

I tow my boat at 70mph on the interstate. It's the happy medium of getting there faster, not super terrible fuel economy and not being the truck causing everyone else to get backed up by being 20mph below the flow of traffic.

Depends on where you are 70 mph isn’t legal while towing. I know the experts on this forum understand speed limits are for us mere mortals. But, did you ever consider speed limits are to protect you but everyone around you?

Preaching off. And I’ll still stop and help you when you loose control. But I’ll help the others first

Washington and California are the only two states with limits lower than 65mph for towing.

No one reads their trailer tire speed ratings.

65mph is standard now. We get all sorts of idiots going 130-140kph with campers (80mph? I think)

I just replaced mine, I was surprised. The factory tires were rated at 65 mph (105 kph). New tires are rated at 81 (130). I went up one load rating, from C to D.
Tires are just a tiny part of the stability equation however, and I still think the guys that have to drive hammer-down on the interstate are idiots. You're pulling a camper, therefore probability dictates you're on vacation time. Chill.
Or don't. However much stress and risk you want to inject into your day is your business, so long as you do it away from me. :cookiemonster:

Precisely. My sailboat trailer tires are load D rated at 75mph and my fishing boat trailer tires are load C rated for 81mph.

If your V ≦ 80mph you've no reason to be in the fast lane and I'm immediately suspicious. I've not found a traffic judge who feels differently (yet).

You've clearly not explored I-5 or the 99 where big rigs do 85 in the fast lane.

I set the cruise between 70-75 pulling my 40’ gooseneck enclosed trailer with my F350. Nice happy middle ground from a time to mileage perspective. Tires on the trailer are rated for 75mph and covered 11k miles this year with no problem. I gross just shy of 26k with the Tacoma loaded in, water tanks full, and ready to camp. Just kick back and enjoy the ride

...and Chinese tour busses consistently hover at 95mph!

I used to drive 5 from Kettleman City to Willows, CA weekly to my Duck Club before I altered my path up 101/680/505/5 thru East Bay. I was constantly astonished at those busses blowing by me even when I was white knuckling at 85 poised to react to my radar detector!

10 years of driving up there with no issue and one night at the end of a season, rolling south for home on the 5 for some reason that night and just north of Kettleman, there was only 1 vehicle approaching from behind in the passing lane while I was in the slow lane towing my trailer with ATV and a few hundred decoys and just sort of zoning out at about midnight, cruise set at 65. My world turned blue. He was a real nice guy. Fucker wrote me for exceeding the 55mph limit. He boasted that he was saving me some money by writing it that way. I suggested he could save me a whole lot of money and aggravation if he didn't write it at all. That fell on deaf ears. First ticket in like 25 years and never another since aside from a chicken shit window tint fix-it.
