I have been looking at prices for T100/Tundra/Tacoma 4x2 3rd members in 4.10 gear ratio. Why are they more expensive than, say, 4.56?

I checked some prices for ring&pinion sets. 4.10 ring gear sets are $50-60 higher than 4.56, 4.88 etc. I checked a few different websites of companies specializing in differentials & gears and 4.10 was more expensive at each, both for Nitro Gears and some other brands.

Is it because there is more demand for 4.10 gears?

Or is it technically related? Does the 10 toothed pinion for a 4.10 require finer machining than a 9 toothed pinion for 4.56, so it costs more?

    Just kind of curious.

Oh, while I'm asking questions... why does Yukon Gear not offer a 4.10, but I see a 4.11? Is 4.10 the same as 4.11 (same # teeth on ring / pinion)? Or does 4.11 have actual different teeth ratios on the ring vs pinion?

    Thx.

4.1 is factory ratio, made by Toyota, paying OEM markups. You can buy them at your local Toyota dealer.

It could be because 4.10 gear sets are thicker than lower ratios (higher numbers). To fit more teeth in the same space, more material has to be removed.

I was just surprised that 4.10 gears (e.g. a set of 4.10 ring & pinions from Nitro) were more expensive than 4.30s and 4.56s etc (if my memory hasn't already failed me).

Probably higher priced because the sales volume of aftermarket 4.10’s is lower. If you want 4.10’s for an 8.4, you could consider buying a good used 4cyl pumpkin and save some lettuce. ;) Then spend what you saved and more on an ARB locker. :spending:
