Why are aftermarket wheels such a thing?

Forgive me if this offends some and irritates others, but why is buying aftermarket wheels so popular?

Ofcourse I can see there is the obvious incentive that is looks great but it seems it can get pretty pricey as well as potentially mess with some of the driving angles.

Are there any performance benefits like them being lighter, stronger, something along those lines or is it purely for looks? I'm genuinely curious.

That being said its your money and if you want to buy wheels just to make your truck look bad ass and for no other reason.....that's fair.

fully armored, 4.88, 33 skinnies, tundra brakes, a REAL cold air intake.
Well, in racing, they can be lighter stronger, more ridgid provide better brake cooling.

In Offroad bead locks keep your tires on at low low pressures.

They can come in different offsets, diameters, and widths to achieve anything from better form to better function.

Most people do it for looks obviously.

Steel wheels can be dented and repaired on the trail, but the trade off is weight and not as aesthetically pleasing.

    Aluminum had always been poplular.

Muscle cars , minis, and VW to name a few have used magnesium wheels in the past.

There are A LOT of different reasons.

The wheel is a pretty amazing invention/discovery and technology continues to evolve.

For me, it's about personality of the vehicle. I personally don't like the machined metal on the Sport and I'm leaning toward American Outlaw's 17" Marshal.

Aftermarket Rims + disposable income = "Brah, what tire/rims are you running and will it rub with 35s".

At least that's the equation that I've been able to come up with:confused:

it’s as simple as this. people like changing things to suit their aesthetic.

sometimes thats purely visual other times performance is a factor.

it all depends on how deep your pockets are when it comes to what you want to spend

OEM wheels have a set size/width/offset. Some people need or want different sizes, so that’s why there are aftermarket.
    Plus stock is.... well, stock.

Well.. we ALL are Tacoma owners..

There aren't many aftermarket wheels that don't look hella bro. The only wheel upgrade I plan to do is TRD. :crapstorm:
