Why are aftermarket wheels such a thing?

I thought one might’ve instigated the other thread so like indirect shot at the other...time to investigate time stamps to find out who’s taking a stab at the other lol...

The moon sorta looks like a half sunken in mud TRD OR wheel tonight...hopefully tomorrow it’s back to a TRD PRO...

To beat a dead horse, the various reasons aftermarket wheels are popular:

    1. Some are lighter (SCS F5 16" is 16lbs vs 32lbs 16" stock). This can improve performance in some areas if paired with a relatively light tire, or mitigate performance loss if offset with a heavier tire than stock.

    2. It's the easiest, cheapest and most easily reversed aesthetic modification. Keep your truck yours. A set of aftermarket wheels allow you to transform a humble work-and-play truck into a meaner machine. And when you go to sell, it's easier to market your truck to a broader audience by returning the oe wheels and selling your after market's separately. Netting you more money.

    3. It can alter/improve your tire options. After market wheels with bigger offsets than stock can allow you to run fatter tires with less complications for you. Cant have your rubber rubbing things it isnt supposed to, and this way you can avoid using spacers.

    4. As previously mentioned, steel wheels are more durable in more demanding off road conditions. A hammer or mallet can put then back into shape so a bent rim on the trail doesnt ruin your day.

    5. As previously mentioned, bead locks increase tire performance while crawling and off roading, especially with lower air pressures.

It's a rare occasion that I like a set of aftermarket rims on a truck.

One of the things that I liked about my Off Road was the look of the wheels, of course I'm an old man so what do I know. I do think that the more agressive looking sidewalls on some tires really help with the look. If I were doing alot of extreme off roading I would probably run some type of aftermarket for the reasons that others have stated.

Nothing is worse than the "Rockstar XD" wheels. even more sad that Toyota is offering them as a factory option

T-Force is a toyota wheel that i assume they outsource. Mine came with a variation as part of the TSS package. Google T-force wheels

I'm actually really happy with the look of the stock rims on my SR5. They're very spartan and fairly simple. I've seen some very cool wheels on this forum, but that mod is extremely low on my list.

I go function over form every day.

My uca's required a minimum of 17" rims. My tires were going to be heavier, the rims were lighter (offset some of the weight increase). Easy to clean.

Side benefit, they do look nice.

I think you meant 23lbs for the stock 16" wheel.

I've bought rims for 2 vehicles I've owned in my life. One was a set of Buick rims for my Monte Carlo, but I needed the tires. More recently I bought the stock steels for my wife's Rav4 to replace the rusted out ones it has. But to each their own.

I am one to spend a lot on my stereo and people think that's nuts too.

Right, I should have specified that that's the weight for the SR steel wheel and remembered that there are other 16s on the Taco that are alloy. Whoops.
