Why are leather seats getting a lot of hate here?

Personally I like the look of leather but after a few years in my hot and dry climate, they take a beating. You have to keep conditioner on them regularly. They are hot and sweaty in the summer and cold in the winter. It will be a hard sell for me to buy anything but cloth. I find a light solution of rug shampoo, very soft brush, strong shop vac, rinse, and finally shop vac cleans almost anything on cloth seats.

The leather is only in the middle of the seats on the 3rd gen tacomas. Everything else is synthetic. You could email the corporate if you would like and they will tell you exactly that.

Your statements only apply to un-coated leather. Like custom katskins or custom seats at an upholstery shop. Most auto manufacturers coat their leather in urethane or something that seals them. This means your cleaners, conditioners, etc won't penetrate and you are wasting your time.

I would love to tell you that it helps, but it doesn't. Cleaning the seats with a rag and water does just as good as all the fancy leather conditioners. Unless... you take the seats off, sand the top layer off, and then re-dye them.

The truth sucks, but manufacturers only care that the seats look good for 3 years and 36000 miles.

If any of you leather lovers have OEM Cloth Seat Covers that will fit my 08 DCSB....let me know. I’m wanting to replace mine.

I thought it was the other way around, real leather on the outside and the more durable synthetic stuff in the middle where your ass sits?

Leather, back in the day, was for the driver. Cloth was a luxury that the backseats had while the rich sitting back there did snow. Somehow it flipped along the way.

From experience, I feel leather doesn't last as long as cloth, but that's just my opinion.

No sir, the "real" leather is only where your ass sits.

While i agree that most manufacturers seal the leather with something, i still believe seats that are getting cleaned, conditioned and protected will look better in the long run.

When i apply the conditioner and protection cream, they seem to absorb quite nicely. I get that stuff at work for free and it takes me like 10 mins to do all the seats.

I met with a member few months ago and we drove each other trucks. He has the same truck but in white and 2019. His seats looked like shit, dull and rough to the touch. He never ever applied any conditioner or protection cream, just cleaned them. My seats are shiny and soft to the touch.
