Supposedly the Tacoma gets more of its power to the ground than competitors with more powerful engines. Think I saw a thread with a dyno comparison with the Frontier at one point and the power to the ground was almost identical. Can't seem to find it now, of course.

Everyone who has driven my truck has been very impressed by the power it has.

I believe the reasoning behind the recall was that '09+ frames were manufactured by a different company.

You may be right that it's a time thing, but that is a factor. For whatever it's worth, my 2011 frame looks brand new. Still has the stickers on it.

It has the Ranger and 5 Cylinder Canyon beat.

I think the New Colorado is above 240 whp or something. This graphs shows 2012 models and the Colorado in the graph is the 5.3L V8.

Though I agree with alot of things this is true, but look at the 1st gens for instance, they arguably get more money and are highly desirable in comparison to the 2nd gen. comparatively. Might be the same for this next generation. Only time will tell. Regardless all gens are good trucks and good on resale. But the 2nd gen may become the new 1st gen.

Hey, I love the 1972 Rally Nova. They were only made in 72 and maybe some in 71.
I bought a new gold one with black stripes and a 350 automatic. Price in 72 was $3250.00. I wish I still had it.

I bet with torque numbers it would be much higher.

i have a 2010 crewcab TRD sport and bought a colorado crewcab z71 2015. I think the Tacoma is a great truck for off-roading and mods. I just bought the Chevy Colorado 2015 my opinion much better looking. I do hope it's as reliable as my Tacoma have to admit solid truck. By the way Postmasteroats I had a 1978 Rally Nova bought it in North Carolina 250 I think, I am not a real knowledgeable car guy, was indestructible. Cost 4400 dollars.

I hated the 2nd GEN body style, bought 1 for my daughter in '06, then 1 for me in '07.
Sold the 07 in 2012 for a Titan. Hated it, wanted the Taco back, bought the '14.
First GEN was so bad ass, hard to get over, difficult to accept the new.
At this point, only given a few pics, and vague description of changes, I'm not sold.
Let's talk in 2019, see what I'm driving. Can't beat Toyota, despite all the things we would do differently, if we were automotive engineers, business executives, and marketing.
I have a feeling that all will be ok.

As a loyal Toyota vehicle owner for almost forty years i sincerely hope they are right on this one. Sometimes such a radical exterior design change for the sake of change is not always a good thing and is not in the best intrest of the product line. The average consumer is not going to tow a boat, go off roading or put out major amounts of funds for extensive modifications. Torque specs.,HP ratios etc will be low down on the list of necessities. Looks, MPG, comfort and handling will be near the top. There is a lot of competition out there and people and companies not familiar with the reliable of Toyota and outside of the fan base will favor the cosmetics of a vehicle first and how it looks stacked up against the competition. Again, I hope they got this right and I'll reserve any judgement until it is on the road.

BF Goodrich Mud Terrains, LED bar, HID Hi's and Lows. I am planning on trading mine in for a 2016 or newer depending on when i gather all the information I need on this site to build my truck. Seems like every month I learn something new. Future mods so far: Front: - 16" King extended coilovers with remote reservoir shocks - Total Chaos Heim Pivot UCA's & LCA's - 6" BDS lift, just the Spidles & Crossmembers - T100 front axles - ReadyLift tie rods - SS extended brake lines - Larger calipers - Pelfreybilt bumper - WARN® 9.5cti-s winch - Glassworks front fender 6" rise and 4" bulge - Carbon Creations carbon fiber hood - Carbon fiber hood pins Rear: - 4" Alcan full leaf pack with Orbit Eye - King extended shocks with remote reservoir - Pelfreybilt rear shock relocator - ATO 6" shackle flip kit - ARB rear air locker - Rear differential breather mod - Pelfreybilt rear bumper - SS extended brake lines - Glassworks rear fenders with 4" rise and 4" bulge Misc: - 4.56 gears - One-piece driveshaft - RCI skids for transmission, transfer case, fuel tank, and rear differential - B.A.M.F. rock sliders - 17x10 rims with 4.5 backspacing - 35x12.5x17 Toyo Open Country MT - Spidertrax 1.25" wheel spacers - 50" LED light bar - Several Cree LED pods - Rear camera anytime mod - Underbody LED lights - Green HID's - Green LED Fogs - Aluminum camper shell - Line-X the whole truck
With the new GIANT grill extending low into the front bumper, which is also low to the ground, it makes me really curious as to how aftermarket companies are going to be able to make nice high clearance bumpers? That's one major downfall Toyota made with this design. Most all people who wheel want high clearance bumpers.

    Easy...

Though with 3D printing getting better and better...might be able to 3D print a grill to one's liking.

To me, looks like Toyota took a photoshop bloat tool to the old grill...

Great looking car. But, 165 to 200 hp, three speed auto, carb dealing with today's ethanhol and cookie cutter, by today's standard, tires. It would be better to just look at then try to keep it up for a daily driver. I really liked some of my old cars too. But, good riddance compared to today's.

I agree. Different era then with the previous competition, the Colorado has tested out well....even off road considering what it had to work with. At least there is some thing better to compare it with. Nissan is decent but the Ranger and the fall apart Colorado of old just handed over the market. Most who have a 2 nd gen, may not like the looks of the new one, but I think most will all agree, the want one. IMho, Toyota will hit a home run. Imagine, even with the dissing by CR, all the buyers just ignored them and made them the biggest seller in class the last ten years. With the reviews of the Clorado, if they just come close, they will dominate the field again and again and.....

...and they're still selling great. I have seen tons of new Tacomas (different TRD stickers give them away), but only one Colorado, possibly two if it wasn't the same one as the first I saw.

Toyota has a good formula with the Tacoma: Build something that does what it's supposed to do and does it well, spend a little extra on production and engineering instead of bells and whistles so it lasts, and make good on the issues if they do come up (frames, leaf springs). It's not hard to see why it's so successful.

Any other old farts around this forum (& by old farts I mean people that were around on Toyota website forums back in the early-mid 90s) when Toyota dropped the subcompact? Yes, I'm old. :)

For those that weren't born &/or were too young to own a vehicle back then I can tell you that people were bitching, moaning, crying, complaining, & generally professing the sky to be falling because Toyota was dropping the tried & true compact trucks along with a bunch of their key components/attributes e.g.....

    - People were bitching up a storm over the Tacoma's body design (specifically the front fenders & their pronounced grooves).

    - People were incensed, INCENSED, that they'd shit can a beloved motor (22RE) in favor of something that was supposed to put out more HP & get better gas mileage. Who needs better gas mileage anyway?.... It's a damn truck!!!! If you want gas mileage buy a Tercel or Corolla.....

    - People were pissed at shit like changes to the transfer cases (internal components etc) & wheel bearings etc.... didn't matter if they were really recent changes or not.

    Sounding familiar yet? :)

I get the fact a lot of folks don't like the looks of the Gen 3 grill as seen in the pictures, nothing wrong with that opinion. However, what I find funny now that I'm old, is the end-of-the-world attitude that pops up with each specific generation of Toyota fan when a significant generational change happens to their rigs. The reaction has been overblown before, it is now, & it will be when Toyota goes to whatever follows the 3rd Gen.

Weren't people also complaining about the composite box and that they had gone from a small truck to a midsize truck. At the time is was almost as big as the Tundra was at the time.

I'm disappointed because I have expectations. But then again, that's not to PC these days is it?

2016 is hideous to the bone. My .02. Not hating on you if you like it, but - how could you - I mean, it's. .. you know - hideous.

    Just saying:

GenI Tundra 75" wide without fender flares.
Gen2 Tacoma 75" wide with fender flares.
GenI Tundra 79" wide with fender flares.
GenI Tundra Access Cab 218" total length.
Gen2 Tacoma Access Cab and DCSB 208" total length.
GenI Tundra Access Cab 128" wheelbase.
Gen2 Tacoma Access Cab and DCSB 128" wheelbase.
    GenI Tundra 75" bed.
    Gen2 Tacoma 73" bed.
GenI Tundra five inch step bumper.
Gen2 Tacoma three inch step bumper.

GenI Tundra 49" between the rear wheelwells.
Gen2 Tacoma 45" between the rear wheelwells.

Toyota should have figured they could get the 2016 Tacoma to match a GenI Tundra's dimensions, it's not that difficult.

What would kick the crap out of the Colorado/Canyon is upgrade the Access Cab rear seat. GenI Tundra Access Cab has a nice 60/40 split fully padded three passenger foldup bench with folddown center console and cupholders. Slap that into the 2016 Tacoma, what's the problem doing that?

And GenI Tundra has heat and A/C feeds into the rear seats through the center console, I'm not seeing how that should be a problem with a 2016 design on the Tacoma. Seems pretty cheap to do since they had the design on a 2000 Tundra.

GenI Tundra stock has the Shift-L button that locks the A750 into 1st gear for hillclimbing or descending.

Column shift and full gauges on the GenI Tundra. 10.5 inches of stock ground clearance, no low-hanging crossover exhaust, silky smooth drivetrain.

It's pathetic if the 2016 Tacoma can't match a ten year old Tundra. Why not try to match the 2016 Tacoma to a GenI Tundra? Would have smoked the competition for another ten years.
