Why are there so many Tacomas in California?

I think that the places where outdoor pursuit is more popular have a lot of Tacomas such as camping, hiking, surfing, skiing, MTBing, climbing, wheeling... that kind of stuff. Places that have a butt-ugly outdoors or a lazy-ass population are less likely to see high numbers. Big industrial areas heavy into farming, mining, logging, drilling, etc seem to draw more full size diesel burning rigs. Thats been my observation. I doubt Cali has more Tacomas per populace that Oregon, Washington, or BC. I wouldn't be surprised if it had the least. Isn't it just a bunch of Kardashians and the like down there driving little convertibles? :D

Yeah on my job sites all the "Country boys" drive fords and chevys and dodges. All the Hispanics drive Toyotas. If you drive a Toyota I feel you are a bit more educated financially. Why would anyone spend 55k on a ford when you can get the same thing if not better in a Tacoma for 20k less?? I am from Texas, We have so many 1st gens and lots of 2nd gens, only seen like 4 or 5 3rd gens since I got mine 2 months ago. I think they saw mine and bought it because I didn't see any before I bought mine...

It's insane... Every time I go I just laugh about it. When I first noticed it a few years ago, my wife and I were talking about it and we were leaving dinner. I said "lets see how many we see between the restaurant and the hotel" - which was about 3 miles. I think we counted 28 of them. Someday I'm moving to Hawaii, I figured I'd better get the Tacoma now to make it a little easier to blend in! (kidding).

Of the working class of people in California the average wage is much higher so they can better afford the $40,000 trucks ( we pay 10% sales tax on a new car here). The average parking spaces are so tight a full size truck is so much harder to park. Everywhere you go we fight for parking. We have a higher price for gas with the added road tax. Last weekend in Arizona I paid $2 a gallon for regular and drove home in L.A. and its $3 a gallon (we refine our gas here so no added cost for cross country shipping on gas to add to cost). Personally I see much more Tacoma's in Caucasian hands and much more Nissan Frontier's in Hispanic hands. I live in a Hispanic community.
From another perspective my local Toyota dealer sells 30,000 new vehicles a year. That's only one dealer! There are at least 4 other Toyota dealers within 10 miles of him.

Population is too mobile for sales to be the only marker.

Registrations by area would show you where they are 'living'.

Oh yea. I saw them from the plane while dropping into Honolulu because the pilot did a sight see loop. And in Kauai I saw about 20 DCSB 5 luggers in a week. About 5 so far in 5+ years in Seattle area. And you have the weirdest trucks there. Anybody seen a pre 2010 DCLB base model white with black flares, no rear slider, 2wd, no hitch? Probably had crank windows too.

Tacomas used to be built here. My first 4 Tacomas came out of the Fremont plant.

I was born and raised in SC and will say most around here believe that anything made in or by a Japanese company is and always will be crap. It's unfortunately really. The looks on most everyone's face when you pull into a campground towing with a Toyota is priceless. "I didn't know a Toyota could do that" is usually the first thing they say. People on the west coast do seem to be a little more open minded and not so dead set on "American made" vehicles even when they really aren't so American made anymore. Sadly sometimes they are so open minded that their brains literally fall out but none the less.

Top 10 Most "Patriotic" Car-Buying States Ranked By TrueCar Sales Data

"Despite Asian and European automakers having a number of factories in the U.S., many Americans still have strong loyalty to the brands they view as 'domestic'," said Jesse Toprak, senior analyst for TrueCar. "Even as the line defining what is or isn't domestic has blurred, perception, attitudes and buying habits are more resistant to change, particularly in the heartland."

Eighteen states had more than 50% of their new vehicles purchased from domestic automakers. On the flip side, the bottom eight states had fewer than 30% of new vehicles purchased built by the Detroit Three.

Hawaiians are the least likely to purchase a traditionally defined domestic vehicle at 19.4%, followed by The District of Columbia(22.6%), California (22.9%), Connecticut (25.8%) and Massachusetts (25.8%)."

Yes, of course we are! Having lived in both CA and SC- CA marks up everything. A CA resident could buy the vehicle here, and have it shipped to CA cheaper than buying in CA.

Money goes much farther in SC.
