Sean this is a bunch of grown men arguing behind a computer, I have to learn the ropes? I started by complaining about my new Tacoma and I got attacked from different angles by people who think they know it all. And Toyota is not what it used to be and I'll leave it at that..

ECU modifications are on a stranglehold by Toyota. You are out of luck there. Turbo's and blowers are out of the question as of right now by both the factory and aftermarket. The 2nd gen has some support out there, with the previous TRD supercharger being available as well as some by URD with the centrifugal blower, but as of right now, no. Engine swaps are always possible. If you have the money and the time. Anything can be done. Even fitting a viper V10 in here.

It's a truck. They get shit MPG due to their height and garbage aerodynamics. I am actually quite surprised that you are surprised that the MPG sucks. As I stated earlier the power to weight ratio on these trucks are not ideal given the power they have (or lack of to be more specific). Diesel has been something long talked about by the forum, but I believe it is a premise which has never come to fruition at least for the US division of Toyota.

For the moment being, 3rd gen. owners are stuck.

I've always been pissed at the fact that my old mans huge f250 with a lift, tires ect gets better mpg than my tiny little tacoma. Hell some of my friends with huge lifted diesels get like 27mpg on the highway with an eco tune on. if i had any need for a truck that big i would get one in a heart beat. I still run circles around them on the trails though so i suppose that makes up for it

WTF? I'm averaging 22.4 MPG with the 6 spd manual that's only rated for 21 highway (75% highway 25% city). And that's on winter blend gas and hilly Colorado roads. I guess manuals aren't so useless and inferior after all?

What I find unusual how some people get good mileage, and other people get crappy mileage. I get crappy mileage, nowhere near the EPA claim. I can't get the 20+ mpg no matter what I do. Before you tell me I drive it wrong, or not to believe the EPA mileage ratings; I always consistently been able to beat the EPA mileage ratings in all the other vehicles that I currently or have previously owned. I am beginning to think that some of the new Tacos work fine while others are just lemons. My guess is most of those lemon-flavored Taco's have the auto tranny.

I also get tired of the Toyota worshipers who throw out the "If you don't like it, you shouldn't have bought it" and "you should be happy even though your truck gets shitty mileage because it is a good truck otherwise" comebacks on these forums. If a vehicle doesn't do what it is advertised to do, people have a right to voice their concern.

Why do people complain about gas mileage? It's a truck for crying out loud. You get a truck to do man shit, not to worry about getting good gas mileage. Buy a commuter (i.e. Prius) only plausible thing to do IMO

Same, It'll also beat most all full sizes to 60. Motor trend got a 6.8 second 0-60 out of an auto. On car and drivers test site they had the manual 0-60 .8 seconds faster than the auto.... Rips

    Agree completely:yay:

I got 19-20 mpg hwy with my 4.6L V8 '12 Tundra and around 14 in town (smaller town basically stop/start driving and only 2 miles from work). I'm sure others on the Forum has discussed why/why not but I can't understand why Toyota doesn't offer the 4.6L V8 in the Tacoma. Maybe because they couldn't meet the demand as I think it is basically the same engine that goes into the larger Lexus. They damn sure build enough 5.7L V8's as i was in the extreme minority with the 4.6L in the Tundra. But, I never had problems hauling things or pulling my 5 X 10 enclosed M/C trailer with the bike and gear. Haven't tried that yet with the new Tacoma V6. BTW, didn't sell the Tundra because of the gas mileage...hit a mailbox and tore the sh!t out of it all down one side. Decided to trade it for the Tacoma and haven't regretted it.........yet.

I'm not sure, but it doesn't seem like outside of some GMs that V8s are really as good or better. I had a 2009 F150 and on its best day it was 2 MPG worse than my Taco. Oh and the power difference was IMO marginal

I average around 20-21 mpg backroads driving slightly conservative.. Highway can easily pull 23 mpg or better going 60-70.. The worst I've gotten is about 17 mpgs slamming on the gas pedal a few times in s mode shifting at 4-5k rpms. This is all winter New England driving.

I'd like to know how many v8 trucks beat 20-21mpgs consistently...

If you have an auto just let it cruise around at 1k rpms during a 15-20 mile drive...if you get shitty mpgs there has gotta be something wrong with your truck..or you got your foot to floor the whole time...

On my 2nd take. I got 17.3 hwy/city. I have 650 miles on my truck. Will it get better? Seems like it should be better.

It should get better as you break in the engine..Make sure to vary your speed and rpms when breaking in the engine; i think for the first 1500 miles... I would make a effort to floor it couple times a week/month with the ect on after the truck reaches normal operating temperatures..

I have been filling up with 87 since I got the truck and basically get 17-18mpg every tank which is city driving, I filled up 1 time with 93 and got 16mpg, not a scientific result obviously I can't guarantee my driving was the same as previous tank but definitely not encouraging to waste money on higher octane, it was an experiment.

I have driven one tank all highway and I got 20mpg, so much for their rates of 19/23 being on the money..it sure would be nice to hit 19 at worst case scenario but I struggle to get to 18 in the city and couldn't even get to 21 on highway when I purposely tried to get good mpg

What I really want to know is why didn't they use the engine in the rx350 to run the taco, that's my wife's vehicle and it's fast as hell compared to the taco, obv better mpg b/c it's suv but why couldn't they modify the rx350 setup to work in the taco for hauling and whatnot versus use a totally new engine?

...the NEW '16 RX got the SAME engine as the Taco but tuned little differently. The OLDER RX350 engine was from 2007-2015. Do you still want that OLD engine in your new Taco??????

Sure, at least it feels like you can pass someone on the highway versus driving a turtle LOL

to be more specific I would like the Taco to have the acceleration of the 2010 era RX 350...I don't give a shit what motor

Exactly.. I've tried to explain this to some ppl and it still boggles their mind how a V8 can sometimes get better mileage than a V6.. I always use a Corvette to explain power to weight ratio comparisons. By the time I'm done they have this look on them ... Lol!
