I said 1/2 ton. Of course a real 3/4 will out perform it

I said reliability, not operation while its working

My bad. For some reason I read 6.6 L GM, which would be the Duramax.

All the people I know, even the ones that had bad Ram experiences, praised the way the 8 speed shifted. GM has and Ford will have similar transmissions though within a year. Honestly, it's been a while since I knew someone who had any of the big 3 where a transmission failed on a gas engine truck. A few guys have problems with the Cummins grenading the transmission but, then again, I think Fiat over rated it for towing.

If I could only get that gas mileage, I would have nothing to complain about in my new Tacoma :)

It's been my experience that the load on the engine has more influence on fuel consumption than the number of cylinders or engine size. A larger number of cylinders has more internal energy loss than less cylinders but runs more rough. It's a fine balance of cylinder size vs. number. Reduce the load on the engine and your MPG goes up. If you increase tire size your engine load will increased due to increasing the drive ratios, more weight due to larger tires, increased wind resistance. Speed increases wind resistance exponentially. Also, winter fuel is has about 1.5% less BTU than summer. No 2 people drive the same. Some jump off the line faster than others. Some drive slower all the time. If you live in a hilly area your mileage will go down. My opinion is that if you worry about getting more than 15-18 MPG you probably shouldn't be in 4WD work truck. (A real truck with a strong and heavier ladder frame, unlike a faux truck Ridgeline).

I recently changed from a 2013 Tacoma Limited averaging 16mpg.

    Before that I had a 2011 6speed Taco that averaged 14.5 mpg

    I purchased a 2015 pro4x Titan for my 2013 Limited + $2000.

Now I average 14.5mpg and have a truck that is tune able to run 0-60's around 6seconds.

Simply put its aero and drivetrain losses. Trucks are bricks. The things are built like a sail, the undercarriage drags like an anchor the flat rear and bed are the same. And you have losses from the front drive assembly spinning for no reason. The difference between fullsized and mid is damn near equal.

these things are gas hogs, my runners were a few MPGs better and not to bad....
The tacoma was bad from day 1 but is faster than a runner so something is different...
But mine gets the same mpg as a stock jeep and I'm lifted 32" and running a richer map...
I'll be installing a unichip to see if I can build a MPG map....

If Toyota would put enough balls under the hood, say 300-320hp, the truck would get better mpg's because it wouldnt have to work as hard to move it. As it is now the truck is underpowered. We have to push the skinny pedal harder to get it going than we would if they would get their head out of their ass and do it right. I'd like to see them offer a complete program upgrade, maybe label it under the TRD product that would install the lexus tune or better. The exact same engine in the tacoma is in the lexus and makes 311hp. The olny difference is the programming. They "detuned" the tacoma so you can run low grade fuel.

    +1,
Cannot go by EPA stickers. Toyotas seem to do better than other brands when actuals are compared to stickers. Actual numbers are best to compare to. Ecoboost is good example. Unless you drive 55 on the hwy you will get no where near EPA rating. My brothers 5.0 F150 gets 15-16 on hwy. I get 20-21.

Mine gets nowhere close to the EPA estimate on the window sticker.

wow, a lot of hate going on here.

If you're happy with your MPG out of 278HP V6 that's great.

For the rest of us that travel a lot on the highway (I put on 50K/year for work in the woods/roads to the woods) and the mileage is the #1 reason why I may have to settle for a Rav4 or CRV. I don't think I am alone on this mileage concern. A little Diesel in a SR5 would suit me p[perfectly. GM only puts the duramax in their twins in higher trim packages.

I essentially have the same truck and average 22 mpg. It's definitely your driving style.

A 9 mile trip is hardly an indicator of actual fuel milage. Not to mention that those on board diagnostics are typically terrible at getting the numbers right.

Why consider a truck if you are worried about fuel economy... Get a different vehicle and buy a trailer if you are that worried about fuel.

Yeah comparing a Diesel to a gas. Real intelligent. And the Tacoma is either a 390 rear end or a 430 rear end. A full size truck that only tows 8000 lbs? That's a joke.

    I don't think you'll be towing much with your 2.7. That's a joke.

Sad part is, it tows almost half what that diesel does. That's a joke.
