I get avg 16 mpg pulling a 3500 lb trailer on a 500 mile round camping trip.
My 12 ' got 17 mpg unloaded mixed driving.

    I'll take it.

New engine seems to be an all around better performer IMO.

Do you need to know, or care?
Except for the tranny gear searching it tends to do, but I didn't say it here.:anonymous:

That's why I'm MT this time around. Learned my lesson on my gen 2. Toyota sucks and tranmission programming. The complaints in gen 3 came as no surprise :p

Ok....personally knowing a couple engineers in the field, and building my own engines a few times, Proper engine break in is MUCH more stringent that what you read in a manual. You hold it at specific RPM's, change oil. Run at certain temps, change oil. Run under certain power loads, and change the oil. Lather, rinse, repeat. SO......While the auto manufactures put the standard "CYA's" in the manual, if people were to buy a vehicle, and have to "break it in" as it should, no engines would last their first oil change.

Covered in stickers and chrome stick-ons for extra horse torques and foot powers. Icon sticker gets me tons of travel, dozens of milimeters.

Compared to my other cars, Toyota's break in recommendations are pretty vague. Basically "Don't do anything stupid for the first 5k miles"

I'm trying to figure out how I'll do mine. I'm picking it up in a week and the job I'm on is all highway driving about 70 miles round trip. I'll be doing 65-70 the whole drive other than maybe like 5 minutes of it just getting to the highway

Don't sweat it. I drove my Challenger 400 miles home from AZ. All freeway. Runs like a champ.

I run mine in S5 it's a totally different truck. That 6th gear is to high of a gear for anything with hills.

Even at 75mph it was downshifting on grades. I really like running in ECT mode. Much more responsive

Yea I don't run in ect but I never take it out of S5. The gearing in S5 is .69/3.90. The gen 2 is .72/373 so it's damn close to the gearing in a gen 2. I love the truck now that I run in S5. It should have came with a 5 speed or a 4.56 rear gear.

it's not just the pumping loss, the pressure in the chamber at BDC should be near one atmosphere so all the energy of combustion is used up. This why they had to redesign the flow of the intake tract into the cylinder to help push the exhaust out of the cylinder without the help of left over pressure of combustion. That's where most of the fuel savings comes from in Atkinson and simulated Atkinson

Exactly. We all did a lot of research when this was introduced with the new model

well then run it in S5 when you are going uphill. Why won't you let it run in S6 when you are flats? That's stupid. You are wasting gas

I get my best mileage in S5. Even on flat sections going 55 or less, I have found S5 to be best. If I'm on the highway, I'll bump up to S6 unless it's a super hilly section of highway. If that's the case, I'll be in S5 just to avoid the constant shifting.

I'm pretty happy and my transmission is getting better as miles go up, currently around 1300. BTW, it's a 17 trdsport 4x4 dcsb

My last tank got 22.8 hand calculated, the tank avg on display was 22.4.. it's nice when the truck out performs the computers calculations. Lol

Given I drive relatively easy and maintain my speeds, and coast to stop signs and traffic lights. I've never been a person to brake hard. I really like that the torque converter locks up and doesn't free spin to help slow it down, reminds me of the ats transmission in our f250 cummins.

I have yet to tow with the tacoma yet, but have had a few payloads, fridge and motorcycle.

I know I brought it up off subject. My 03 F250 DCSB lariat engine which had been tuned its whole life finally blew a head gasket at 260k miles. I sold that engine for $2k, and bought a totaled 05 ram with 90k miles on it for $2500. Then a lot of money for a kit and such. Lol

The $8000 trans and torque converter we had put in maybe 30k miles prior to blown head gasket and engine Swap.

So yeah bullet proof common rail cummins f250. Oh that is still the 5.9 btw

I didn't do a thread on that build, but here's my current slow diesel build I'm doing on the cheap.

I'm not sure why Toyota went with an Atkinson Cycle engine and why thier products don't have turbos. Turbos are the future. Formula 1 is running all Turbo Engines, All supercars now use Turbos, Ford is phasing in an all Turbo engine lineup, ford won the 24hr Le Mans with a v6 Twin Turbo engine.

Turbos provide both power and efficiency. Toyota needs to get on board.
