Toyota seems to like to keep the gearing lower on sticks. I don't mind, it's nice having the lower gearing in 4-low.

I think the way the EPA rates vehicles isn't favorable on sticks anymore. Autos can do a lot but there's no way they can transfer power more efficiently than a manual. Maybe just as much, but not more. The advantage is probably the engine management knows more about what's going on with an auto while with a stick it can't predict what the knucklehead behind the wheel is going to do so it's not able to skip injector or ignition cycles as easily.

Plus, as people mention, having control over your truck means it varies a lot more. I get better mileage than the EPA rating in my truck and our Forester (also a stick), while my wife despite only being 2 years younger is a lot less of an old fart wannabe I guess and she usually gets worse.

Even with this 04B10 frankentune, I'll have to admit it's fun to let the 2GR eat.

It depends heavily on the kind of driving you are doing. I do almost all highway driving and very little driving in town. I'm averaging almost 2 mpg more in the manual than the 2016 auto i had. If that was flipped and I did almost all my driving in town, i'm sure the auto would be better based on the numbers I was seeing when I had it. I typically set the cruise at 65-70 and drive for hours. The 6MT has no issues maintaining speed in 6th gear with headwinds or hills (unless you get to the steep grades out west) and the auto would typically be in 4th or 5th gear, sometimes 3rd.

Both my trucks have full fuelly data below from the time I drove them the off the lot. Locations and driving style has been pretty much identical between the two trucks.

What rpms does the auto turn at 60mph? I don't do a lot of offroading, but if I do end up off road, will the A-TRAC perform as well as the CC?

A-TRAC differs from Crawl Control+Multi-Terrain Select in two ways.
    1) it does not modulate speed for you (CC)
    2) you cannot select between varying levels of allowed slip (MTS)

The roots of the system - a traction aid that utilizes the brakes to prevent unnecessary wheel spin - are identical. So yes, A-TRAC will perform as well as CC+MTS when the time comes.

Truck is fine doing 60. I can get 20+ MPG doing 60.

In CA we take highways at 70-75 MPH and the truck can barely eek out 18 MPG there. The drag is noticeable.

You are concerned with mpg and probably won't leave the pavement then why buy a 4wd offroad? You live down south and currently have a 2wd, get a nice new well optioned 2wd and save some money among other things and get better mpg. Sounds like it is more down your alley.

Depends. A DCT is more fuel efficient and much faster than any automatic or manual. Not that we'll ever see a DCT in a truck anytime soon.

Getting 18-22 mpg. Not bad for a truck given all it can do!

You buy a truck for its capability. You buy a corolla for fuel economy.

I drive mine super mellow and have factory wheels/ tires and a shell. I have NEVER seen over 20MPG one single times in 30K miles. You can click on my autosig and see every fillup since new. Should give you a good idea of what to expect with a 6MT.

That's surprising. I'm guessing I see a lot more elevation change out this way and average 21-22 without gear on.

Same here, 21-22 is not a problem. I'm at sea level though, and no mountains. Anything upwards of 65mph though, the mileage begins dropping like a stone.
