I wonder why that is? I just checked and you're correct indeed.

This definitely can happen. It happened to me. I got stuck pretty bad in a ditch. The truck couldn't get out with the locker. Next I engaged the crawl control. I ran the CC for 2-3 minutes and a buzzer came on saying that the tranny got to hot. I shut it down and waited to let it cool off. I tried the CC again and this time it got me out. So, yes it worked, but at what cost? As soon as I got on the pavement I knew my brakes were warped. The drums had gotten to hot. I took it in and the dealer resurfaced them for me.

The story doesn't end there. I just had the dealer replace my drums last week. The shimmy had come back. I've been using CC, not as hard as the initial time, but it still warped the drums.

I'm pretty bummed. I initially was going to get a manual, but the CC changed my mind. I'm also worried about the tranny.
It got to hot on that initial run. It runs warm when I work it hard, like driving up windy Mtn. roads. I've had it up to about 230 before. The light doesn't come on there though. When I asked the dealer how hot it can get before the warning light comes on, no one knew, not even their master technicians could answer that. This doesn't inspire a lot of confidence in them. What I wanted to do was change the tranny fluid early so as to protect the tranny. Well, that'll be 430 bucks, thank-you very much. Now, if I have to do that every 20-30k miles, that'll be quite costly. I'm seriously thinking of selling it and getting the TRD OR MT just because of that. I just wish I new how hot is too hot and if getting the tranny up to 230 on a semi regular basis is going to shorten it's life span.

$430 is an epic rip off. My stealership charges $250 taxes in and that's Canadian dollars.

Try another dealer or independent shop.

Every thief and wife in the world can drive a stick. You just won't have a clutch when they're done.

To the OP, its personal preference, there is no benefit to an A/T or M/T in my opinion other than preference. I have an 88YJ I use for 4 wheeling which is a 5 speed manual and this truck is an A/T. The only thing I'll notice is that if my Tacoma throws an engine bolt/mount I won't have a transmission stick to smash into my leg, true story

$430 is a rip off. They did my FJC for $230.

So I took it to the dealer in Barstow and these guys were great. I spoke with a mechanic that actually knew something. They said that the dummy light comes on at 302*F. He said that running it at 230 is no problem. They said that they'd only charge $250 for a tranny flush. That makes me feel much better about running the truck that hot. I plan on getting a small travel trailer, so we'll see how she does this summer.
