I was going to say this. The problem with those things is they create mechanical advantage when in an accident. So an accident that would have maybe only been a new bumper now requires your truck to be racked in a frame machine which will lower your resale value when they see that on the CarFax.

All that does is increase the chances your 2018 frame is going to bend on impact. If someone is going to hit you they are going to hit you. Carry good insurance.

If anything get a fab bumper. Anything protruding from the hitch increase the likelyhood of expensive damage.

Well I have; The Bumper is attached with 1/8" mild steel plate, and the hitch is 1/4" tubular bolted to the frame with grade 8 bolts. The bumper will not take nearly as much kinetic energy into the frame as the hitch. There are about 300 youtube videos where people hook things to bumpers and try to pull it and their bumper pulls free. This isn't rocket science; but You probably haven't taken a physics class.

Thats not the point. Items protruding at a single point from the frame act as a wedge. A steel bumper displaces energy along the entire back of the frame with minimal increase in frame length so impacts are less likely to cause damage.
Its how they displace energy along the frame. Bumpers do a better job which is why they are used off road.

The bumper has become an aerodynamic and a styling piece, it stopped being a safety device decades ago.

Let's go over this. Assuming the federal requirement applied to trucks (it doesn't), having a 2.5 mph bumper would absorb a 2.5 mph crash.
Now take a 70 mph crash that these vehicles are designed for. E=. 5*m*v^2.
Everything stays the same but v. A 70mph crash has 78,300% MORE energy.
The bumper (if it absorbs all energy from 2.5mph, btw it doesn't...) will have absorbed 0.012% of the energy.
    Effectively nothing.
    Bumpers are effectively worthless.

In our trucks? Little more than a reinforced step.

As said above the OEM bumper is for styling, it won't absorb a damn thing.

Part#1 and the hitch itself is the only metal in the entire assembly. And part #1 is tin can level thickness.

Exactly. So if you were to try to twist the frame by grabbing the bumper, it wouldn't work. However put a long pole connected to a hit and try to twist the frame it will indeed twist. If you still don't believe it, google the name of a freelance insurance adjuster in your area and give him a call.

Too true. I was on 405 a couple days ago and saw someone coming up fast as I was moving slowly for traffic in front of me. Fortunately I got the MESO S2 total tail light kit installed Monday. I hit my brakes and that guy immediately slammed on his brakes, barely missing me.

Can confirm. Didn't have trailer properly locked in place and it came off the ball while going over a speed bump @ 5mph. Put a good dent in item 3 and 1.

someone clipped our 2018 taco at ~5mph and part #15 literally fell apart like a cracked egg shell (along with all that bracket bullshit behind it). When the wife told me the bumper "cracked apart" I thought oh silly woman doesn't know the difference between bending and cracking metal. Upon inspection I realized Toyota used X-mass tree ornaments material to construct the "bumper": [IMG]

I think they do this for money and weight savings but the lame part was the bumper did such a bad job of protection that it moved back enough to bend the rear bedside fender and chip of paint off (ya rust!!). I'm going to saw this fender section off anyways for the CBI high clear rear bumper I got, but the fact remains that this "pick up truck" is as fragile as a yaris.

Even the entire front end is 100% plastic ! lol what?! where the fuck do I mount lights and shit? what do you even step up on when looking under the hood? Hope someone also hits my front end so I get that insurance check for that front bumper I guess.

If I didn't have to worry about wife / kid I would have purchased a salvaged gen1 taco or gen1 frontier and proceeded to build and actual off road truck without a $450/mo payment lol.

Heres a good one from today. Lady tailgates me for awhile, then when its time to turn onto the new highway, she shorts the exit and tries to go around me. I had my blinker on the whole time too.
    Starts around 4:00
