Did you forget to attach the ground at the back of the engine?

If you took off the valve cover you may have left off the ground that is on the back of the engine. Its easy to do.

    I'm not there.

Look closely between the head and the firewall is the best advice I can give. The issue may not be the ground, I'm only offering suggestions.

Check to make sure the mass air flow plug is properly seated as well.

Any way you can read the codes associated with the CEL? Harbor Freight has some cheap code readers that work very well.

Yes its a problem. You need to review everything that you did to make sure it is all back in its proper spot.

Check it again. If it was running fine before you made the repair and now it is not you did something to effect the engine. Go back and start taking everything off except the valve cover. Did you seat the plugs properly, wires are back in the right spot, hoses are connected? It doesn't effect the running of the engine, but, you need to torque the bolts on the valve cover gasket to spec.

I recently had this issue on a honda odyssey van I replaced valve cover gaskets on. When I put the valve cover back on the spark plug seals got cocked and weren't sealing good on the back of the engine at the spark plug tubes. I had to do a smoke test to figure out where the vacuum/manifold leak was. I am not familiar with the motor you have (2.7) as I have always had the 6 cylinders in my Tacomas. But sometimes the valve cover gasket can also get pinched or not seal good if it shifted when you were installing the valve cover and cause an intake leak. You really need to put a code reader on it and see if it is throwing an intake leak code or what code it shows. Auto Zone, Advance Auto Parts, Oreilly's, will put a code reader on it for free if you can get it to them. As mentioned I had to put a smoke machine on mine to find where the intake leak was as it was not apparent by a visual test.
