Another glorious TW thread filled with misinformation and utter shit.

Tacoma's use a double a arm suspension with a coilover. Yes...a coilover...stock. OME, Billy, King, Fox, etc are still all coilovers. A coilover doesn't dictate KPI/SAI. The ball joints on the end of the double a-arms do. You can place the lower mount anywhere on the LCA that fits your needs for the shock ratio you are trying to achieve.
With a McPherson strut, everything (linear and lateral load) rests on the lower strut mount (and there is no upper a-arm).

    OP
If you do not need very specific ride height adjustments, have no desire for dampening tuning to fit your driving style, don't care about rebuildability or individual component replacement/upgrade, and are basically just looking for a marginally better than stock replacement, then 5100's will do you fine. There's no need for a quality shock if you're just pavement pounding other than picking up bro hoes. Even for that I can send you some King stickers attached to some silver bullet beer cans and you can fake it with desert hoes.
On the other hand...if any of these things are attractive to you, even in the long run, better to buy once, cry once.

If you even think for one second that you will be satisfied with billies then odds are you will be...

See I woke up in the middle of the night from having nightmares about the girl riding shot gun messing up her makeup while bombing down a backroad...

If they are blown then they will be replaced.
This. Only time they don't honor the warranty is if there are signs of abuse. By Bilstein's standards that means broken or bent rod. If you are hucking or jumping your truck on Bilstein shocks, you deserve everything you get.
Not sure why you say this. I got my Bilsteins from Scott and when one started to leak, I called RCD and explained they were bought second hand at low miles. RCD still honored the warranty and I got two brand new shocks :notsure:

Will someone please raise their hand if you have actually blown a shock, and had it replaced free of charge? If you read the requirements of the warranty basically the moons of 19 different planets need to align for them to honor the warranty.

You can split the difference and go with Bilstein 6112s. Much better than 5100s, and much cheaper than the premium brands. I love mine.

I was backing you up! Sorry if that didn't come across like that. :D

And I mean't Bilstein honoring it, not vendors.

also correct me if I'm wrong but don't 98% of people who get fox/icon/king go "Midtravel"?

I disagree with this. I was technically out of warranty, I called the guy and started to explain and he cut me off and said, just send them in, both of them (only one was leaking) and he'll take care of it. I sent them in and got two brand new shocks free of charge. Pretty easy to me :notsure:

OP, my two cents, I started out with Bilsteins. It was ok for a while but as I started to enjoy wheeling, I realized I need to upgrade.

Buy once, cry once, as they say.

When my bilsteins leaked they just dismissed it. When the seal failed and I lost a significant amount of the oil they said SOL. When I had one snap in half they told me it was my fault.

The truck never left the ground when I had them. I never ran them in any whoops or ruts. I had the correct length for my application. They saw less than 50 dirt miles in the 25k I ran them. Three out of the four of my 5100's failed.

I think I just had a really bad run of luck with bilstein, but in my experience they told me to pound sand numerous times.

Another mid priced option is the Fox Performance 2.0 Coil Over.. you don't hear much about it though. I've always wondered how good they are on a Tacoma.
