Thats a bluetooth/wirelss/contactless exhaust hanger. It serves the purpose of hanging the exhaust, using rare earth magnets in parallel, to equally hold the exhaust in place, while also repelling the exhaust away simultaneously. Suspicious for sure, because I thought they moved to bolt-less on the 21+ year models, but yours is bolted on. Hmmm :spy:

Is it attached to that band clamp to help hold the pipe in position and reduce vibration?

Nobody better question the all-mighty Toyota engineers that are still using rear drum brakes, they know best!

I’m pretty sure the drum brakes are a drinking game the engineers at Toyota play. Every time someone on here complains about drum brakes, you drink.

You can't even make this shit up lol

When asking the chief Toyota engineer why they are still using drum brakes in 2020+ the actual answer:
Q: “Why did you decide to use rear drum brakes?”
A: “We used drum brakes because we didn’t use discs.”
Q: “ OK, but why didn’t you use disc brakes? “
A: “ We didn’t use disc brakes because we chose to use drum brakes.”

I would be more satisfied if he just said, “well we over produced rear drum brakes for the 2016 model by 10:1 per truck and we have an overstock of rear drum brake systems since 2016, so we are just going to continue to use this objectively shittier older tech.”

    Oh look, another mod....

I think rear drums on a truck is a great idea; but they do have their drawbacks:

    Drum vs Disc

So which brake type is better? As with most things in life, the answer is rarely clear-cut. Drum brakes have some major design flaws: they overheat too quickly, take longer to dry off, and are typically heavier than disc brakes.

At the same time, disc brakes cannot be used as a parking brake because they expand when hot and contract when cold. If we relied on them for a parking brake after using them, they would eventually cool off, shrink, and lose contact with the brake disc. Obviously we’d have a problem here.

The two brakes are just different. Disc brakes are the more effective and reliable choice, but they have their limitations. Drum brakes are not very practical, but they are crucial to parking a car – unless of course you’d like to go back to wooden blocks on sticks.

Therefore, drum brakes are often still found in modern cars. Manufacturers will usually outfit the front wheels with disc brakes since they have to work the hardest, and drum brakes in the rear. Some sports cars will use disc brakes on all four wheels, but have one additional drum brake for parking purposes.

They are an objectively antiquated shittier braking system that's only justification for use would be cost savings. "drum brakes are still often found on modern cars" lol yeah maybe if your definition of modern is 40 years ago, this isn't the 1980's, even a Honda civic has had all around disk brakes since the 90's like most vehicles on the road. Disk brakes outperform the old shitty tech of drum brakes in every single way, wet condition braking, heat dissipation, etc. However I must admit it is nice to not have to deal with a lot of brake dust on the rear wheels.

Explain to me your logic of "I think rear drums on a truck is a great idea" only someone with a Tacoma/Ranger small truck that doesn't tow would say something so outlandish

My ‘03 Duramax has disc brakes on all four corners. The rear disc have a drum parking brake inside the disc. They are a bear to get adjusted so they work and don’t drag.

It's too early into the day to get into a stupid internet war of words & opinions. You win man. Drum brakes are satans invention and should be illegal.

Since this has devolved into a drum brakes discussion (BTW, they are far, far superior off-road), after OP asked about a heat shield bracket, I might as well ask:

any benefits to running 94 octane?
