    I've lost track
well I bought mine because I'm eighteen and the insurance (that I pay myself) for me to drive a tacoma is A LOT already. A 4x4 would have made it so I couldn't afford the payment and the insurance. So personally I would love to have a 4x4...but if all I can afford is a prerunner thats fine with me because it still kicks ass compared to any other mid-sized truck out there.

I originally bought my truck because I have always wanted a Tacoma and I DJ so I need the to carry around all my equipment. I have had the truck for 2 1/2 years and only needed chains once when i went to a cabin in tahoe.

I wish I would of got 4x4 because after joining the forum and realizing how much I snowboard, it would come in handy...

I have thought about trading up but don't know if it's worth it..

I have no use for a 4x4. So I see no reason to pay extra for one and to factor in the additional maintenance that a 4x4 requires and a Prerunner is a perfect fit for what I use my truck for. This is my 2nd Prerunner :D I specifically went shopping for a Prerunner. Never even looked at a 4x4 model. Insurance is cheaper also.;)

    1) It meets my needs.
    2) Cost. I wasn't in a position to spare an extra few thousand bucks.

    1) Got a really good deal on my 07 prerunner
    2) Cost is cheaper (Insurance & my daily commute)
    3) At the time of purchase, I didn't think I would need 4x4. I never owned a a truck before so I didn't know what to expect. I really like to go off road now so 4x4 would be nice but it's cool. If I had 4x4, I know i'd be off roading more and messing up my daily driver so it's sort of a good thing.
    4) I prefer open desert off roading

If it is any consolation, you are not alone.

You have way more company than will admit to it.

Mainly because after owning a 4x4 Toyota truck for 7 years I could count the number of times I used 4wd on one hand (4). I don't really off road much, maybe a dirt road here or a trail there so a Pre-Runner fits the bill nicely. I like the looks, road height and performance of my Taco.

If I'm going to hard core wheel I'll just use this:

I went with the PreRunner because a winch and recovery gear is cheaper and less maintainence than a transfer case and extra diff (not to mention lighter and less fuel-consuming).

I learned to drive in MT in the winter and had RWD through HS, so I know I can handle a 2WD in winter conditions (skills are a little rusty since I've been on the coast since '92).

Also most/all of the off-roading I'm looking to do would be desert and mountains in the summertime where ground clearance and wheel travel are really the biggest features of the 4WD that are needed, mudding has little appeal to me and if I wanted to do hard core rock-crawling I'd need some heavy mods anyway, so 2WD with a winch and other gear will suffice for that.

If I'd thought I'd really need 4WD to do anything I want to do in the truck, I would have got one, but as long as the PreRunner meets my needs, it never hurts to save some $$$ on insurance and gas as well as price.

Don't want the extra expense, weight, maitnenance and problems a 4WD would/could bring. The area where I live is well cared for when it snows.

Saved $2k. I don't need 4x4, we had an '87 full size Blazer with manual locking hubs for years... never really used it to its potential. Plus I get better mileage without the extra weight of the 4x4 system.
I use my truck for hauling and towing so I wanted the long bed and needed a double cab for our kid. If I could have found a TRD OR in the area I might have purchased it but as it was they had to drive 200 miles to get my TRD Sport.

if you buy a 4x4, you definately want to buy a brand new one. stay away from used 4x4 trucks.

if someone is selling a 4x4, you know it has been offroad, or used to pull. thats just to many problems.

I bought my 1st gen 2wd drive prerunner recently and I love it.

but dont get me wrong, I would love a 4x4. but I cant even come close to affording a new truck

plus I live in florida. I really dont need a 4wd

Bought it myself and figured I could save the difference for mods or to pay it off sooner. Have no need for 4x4, I do what I can with what I got and it makes it more fun to be thinking....am I gonna make it. I wouldn't ever trade my prerunner in for a 4x4, I love it! Plus I drive about 100 miles a day so couldn't use the little less weight for lug around

Pre-runner is basically a 4x4, but without 4wd... Kinda hard to explain. its a truck that doesnt look like a 2wd drive, but doesnt have 4wd.

just about black everything. i don't dig the chrome.
seems the same for everyone really. and for me too, i use it to tow my jet ski to the lake and back home. suits me well and i do some minor off road trailing fun. nothing obviously too gnarly.

Mnan you got a fancy looking truck. I gotta couple employees that would love that truck. They took the not so good attempt and tried it on Ford and Chevy trucks.

They love mine and its not even close to yours!

If I had it to do over again it would be a 4x4, no question. I still may give mine to the wife and get a mag grey 4x4 later in the year.

I bought my truck to haul stuff in the bed not to off road, wanted the most bang for buck and the PreRunner was it.
