Why did you buy a Tacoma instead of the Tundra?

After being in the Tundra, it was a boat. Too big for my needs. I also wasn't impressed with the interior.

I drive round trip 90 miles a day for work.
The Thundra would cost me alot more each week in gas.

Fuel milage and size. The tacoma is the perfect size to fit in our garage and gets decent mileage. No doubt the tundra is a very nice truck but just not what I needed.

A little of this and a little of that.
The Tundra is ugly IMO. I know it's an awesome truck, but I really don't like the way it looks.

Tundra is to big for my everyday driver as I don't haul anything. Plus the Tundra I looked at that was 4x4 was 10-15k more than the Tacoma.

Resale value. Tacomas definitely seem to hold their value better than the Tundras. I had a Nissan Titan...it was a good truck...but I love my Tacoma.

I had a 98 Tacoma which Toyota bought back due to frame rust. I bought a 2005 Tundra with 36k on it (Spring 2008). It was a great truck. It did everything I asked. Comfortable, pretty quick, reliable as anything...but I didn't love it. It didn't feel like it had the same personality as my 1st gen Tacoma.

So, I sold it. And two years later, I have another Tacoma - a 14yo x-cab with 274k on it. And I enjoy it more than I did the Tundra, even though it's slower, less tow/haul capable, less comfortable, louder, rattly-er, and beat to shit.

    Why?

I dunno. There's just something about them that I love.

I'll never be towing anything over 6500 lbs. But more importantly, where can you find a Tundra for the same money as a Tacoma? 2013 TRD OR for a Taco is like 30k, equivalent package in a Tundra is at least 40?

Fit my needs for work. Usually don't use the Tacoma for heavy hauling, just the around town and short distance stuff. And the simple fact that by the nature of the materials we sell, the Tundra wouldn't suffice anyway.

Tundra is too big for me! I had a crewmax rockwarrior. Liked the truck but it got 12mpg daily and 15 highway! loved the big heavy beast but it wouldn't fit in the garage either. I got it because I liked it not because I needed it! Soo I kept it a while then traded it in for another tacoma. DC 4x4 taco just is my fav. I just like em. They're a really good all around vehicle.

As others have said, too big. I also don't like the proportions of the truck - seems a bit... off.. to me. Lifted ones look better, but i'm not sure I could survive getting 8 miles per gallon. I considered getting one a few months ago after my 07 was totaled but I had so many aftermarket parts I salvaged, it seemed to make sense to get another Tacoma so I could reuse them.

I don't know what pricing is like now, but in 2008 I paid $15,995 for a 2005 Tundra extra cab 4x4 SR5 V8 with 36k on it. An equivalent 04 Tacoma then would've ran me $15-20k.

My biggest reason other than size is no manual transmission offered on the Tundra.

You know, that may have been the biggest reason I didn't love mine. That's the only auto vehicle I've owned/registered/driven/kept (I briefly owned one other auto, but it was a $100 Bronco II that I sold for $300 a month later, when I bought my first Tacoma).

    1) Tundra is more truck than I need. Anything I need to tow/haul the Tacoma will handle.
    2) I like the size and capabilities of the Tacoma for anything off-highway.
    3) The Tundra just doesn't do it for me. If I was going to buy a full size it wouldn't be a Tundra.

    Edit: Also this:

At my local dealer the 2014 sticker on a Tacoma DCSB TRDOff-Road is in the low 30’s. If Iremember the Tundra’s were only like ~2K more than the Tacoma’s, maybe ~33K, not a huge difference though. I reallydidn’t check the options on the Tundra’s but they had the 5.7, nice tires andwheels, they looked well equipped. Thepoints brought up about the size are certainly valid especially with the parkingspaces getting smaller and smaller. I’msure I’ll end up with the Tacoma but I hope the next time I go to the dealerthey don’t have a Tundra sitting right beside a Tacoma.

    Thanks guys,

It was all about the size when we bought our 2013 AC Tacoma. We plan to wheel on tough trails so size matters...and the Tacoma TRD OR comes with a locking rear diff. That's a big aftermarket expense to add to the Tundra. The Tundra is monstrous by comparison and we already thought the Tacoma was on the whale-ish side for our wants. But, compact pickups no longer exist so midsize it is. Plus, I just don't like the look of the Tundra.

If you are struggling so much over the decision...trying to talk yourself into a Tacoma, then just get the Tundra. Nothing worse than paying for something that you'll regret every time you drive by a Tundra. Just not worth it.
