Had a 1997 Chevy S-10 that I drove for 9 1/2 years. Bought it with 98K miles, and when I sold it, it had 236K. The 4.3L engine and auto transmission never missed a lick, but the front suspension gave me hell....managed to fix that. Last straw was the AC dying at the end of this summer. I don't have the knowledge or tools necessary to work on air conditioning, so I figured it was time to let it go.

Doing a little research on dependable small trucks, the Nissan Frontier and Toyota Tacoma kept popping up as the best choices. Unfortunately, the Tacomas hold their resale value at insane levels, and I didn't think I would find one I liked and could afford. Went on a road trip to look at a Frontier and just happened to find my Tacoma. Its a 5 lug 2004 grandpa truck, but exactly what I need....something I can drive a long time, get good gas mileage and still be able to haul plywood and particleboard.

I bought my Tacoma because I was sick of trying to duck hunt and finish my basement out of my god damned Malibu! I tried to buy one before I got the Malibu but didn't want to shell out the cash and I regretted all 7 of those months :) Love my truck now and plan to give it to my son for his first vehicle in about 15 years!

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
Good idea, it will still be running great in 15 years! My Taco is 10 years old and still runs like new, only has 78k miles on it though.

If I ever have a kid he/she will have a Toyota of some kind too. Definitely something with a gutless 4 banger in it, horsepower and teenagers don't mix, they need slow and reliable.

Only midsize truck on the market that offered a combo of four wheel drive, 4 cylinder and 2 doors. That and it was $20k sticker price.

Why I got a Second Gen Tacoma?

My kids outgrew the hopper seats in my 2001 Xtra Cab Tacoma, and it was such a perfect truck, there was no question about getting a Toyota again... in 2005, and again... a 2010 (the best Tacoma yet)!

Didn't have a need for the towing capabilities of a full size truck anymore, but still needed a truck and always liked the taco for the many reasons mentioned on this forum.

    OMG, dude! I had a G35 and a G37 before this truck. :D

Got the truck because I love the look, wanted a truck to take to the lake (fishing) and I missed having one for all the times I need to haul shit. Reliability and resale were a bonus.

Edit: Plus, I was getting pulled over a lot in the G37. A LOT.

Because I had a 240k mile '93 pickup that never left me stranded. So I sold it and bought a Zr2 s10. Great move on my part....... Drove the s10 for 2 years (suspension lifted) then cut the front out and SAS'd it. Drove two more years.

Now I'm back in a toyota.

I was driving a early 90's 4runner and I was looking to get a new 4runner or a tacoma. I wanted a truck bed so I could carry stuff though. Ended up getting the tacoma as a gift from my parents. It's not 4x4 but it's still pretty dope

Yup. Too bad those '84 extra cabs are so freakin' rare or I would own one. It's really hard to find one that isn't all dicked up by some high school kid.

I've driven in this order a Ranger, 89 Toyota pickup, Corvette, Mazda 323, 95.5 Tacoma, Silverado, Lexus ES330, 05 Mustang GT and now a month old 2015 Tacoma DCLB 4x4.

Before this truck the 95.5 Taco was by far my favorite. No problems whatsoever when I sold it with 160k miles. Loved that I could go camping, haul my quad, easily make it through soft sand etc... Selling that truck is one of my life's greatest regrets. So when I had the money for the new 15 it was a no brainer. I've wanted this truck for years!

I can get Fords under A Plan, which is a damn good deal. Looked at the F150 seriously but it's too damn big for the trails out here, though MPG is the same as the Taco. And the F150 is easily lifted and fitted for 33's. I had a 96 Ranger lifted on 33's that I loved but I sold it, and they don't make it anymore.

BUT. No manual on F150, bigger than I want... for the price of an A Plan F150 4WD with full backseat, I was right on par with the Taco. Which came with a rear locker, 6-speed, ATRAC which is for 99% of the time a front locker, and a MUCH better reputation and resale value.

Couple things I am disappointed with. The stereo is crap. I love the Etune integration, backup camera and nav, but the sound is absolute shit, even with an aftermarket amp, sound processor and speakers. The composite bed and flimsy tailgate aren't so good either.

But I wouldn't trade it for a similar F150 any day.
