Why did you choose a 2nd gen over a 3rd gen?

When I researched a while ago what would fit from my '07 on a 3rd gen if I were to upgrade, conclusion was that some 16s with the right offset and backspacing will clear the caliper just like on my 2nd gen Sport. There are a few on TW I believe as well. Are the any differences between 2nd and 3rd gen brakes? I have American Racing Mojave 16x8 with 0 offset and 4.5bs on my 2nd gen and from what I remember researching, I concluded I would have been ok with those.

Correct. You need the right wheel with the right offset/backspacing available to clear it otherwise it’ll just get stuck on the caliper.

Sorry for the multiple uploads. But that is how much clearance is available with the stock 17” wheels. Roughly .5in.

Get the newest you can comfortably afford... if you decide after buying a 3rd gen you really don't like it give me your address. I'll be right over to swap you with my near perfect '08, no questions asked!

    1. I regret nothing.

    2. Silver Sky Metallic, I regret nothing.

    3. Offroad, I regret nothing.

I think the 3rd gens are ugly as hell, personally. Also dislike losing half a liter of displacement.

Bought a low miles 2013 OR. Drove the 3rd gen and:
    * Didn't like the sight line over the hood compared to the 2nd gen.
    * Didn't care for the front end compared to the 2nd gen.
    * Hated the minivan drivetrain.
    * Didn't want a bunch of tech ie. entune, nav, etc.
    * 3rd gen interior is nice, but not a game changer.
    * Reported 3rd gen issues were a game changer.
I made the right choice, for me. Couldn't be happier.

I got a 2014 2nd Gen, because I was able to find a really good deal. After taxes, title, all that BS, I came in at at little over 25K. The best deal I could find on a 2016 (at that time) was about 36.5, out the door for the DCSB TRD-Off-Road. ...So nearly 11K in savings=a lot of mods down the road (pending wife approval). I test drove the 3rd Gen, and really liked it, but the cost difference was just a lot to think about. The 3rd gen interior blows away the 2nd Gen (I loved the automatic back slider for some reason!), but the 4.0 is hard to beat. I think it comes down to, preference, price, and how much you want leftover for mods. If you search long enough, you can find some good deals on 2nd gens, especially now that the 3rd Gen used market is starting to build. Anyways, you will love either one I think, and good luck with your search!

Def looks close in the pictures. It’s just weird because the brakes are the same, same calipers and rotors. 05-15 are the same, sports came with 17s for looks not because of larger rotors/calipers. Toyota wouldn’t put the option of the 16” beadlocks on their website if they didn’t fit. Also the picture I posted shows a 16+ sport with the same 16” wheels.

I have a 3rd gen, 2017. Not sure if it different than the 2nd gens (2005-2015).

No there not, I posted a picture of the specs of the brakes for the 2017s. And also posted the part numbers for the 2017 sport and off road calipers and rotors are the same. You can 100% fit 16in wheels, maybe not every single wheel but you can put 16” on a 2016+ tacoma.

You can post this stuff all you like. Again, I have an 2017 TRD OR. Neighbor has a 2017 TRD Sport. He liked my wheels and tires. Went to the same Discount tire as I did and DT said the wheels didn’t fit on his truck. So he went to the dealership and they would not mount them either. That’s all I know. I can’t tell you anything else.

I have a 2014 DCSB 4x4 TRD Sport with every option... and added Katzkin leather seats. I got it in January of 2014, so that is why I chose a Gen 2.

Personally... 4.0 > 3.5 Atkinson cycle or not.

ONE regret = not getting a Tundra. The Tacoma tows my boat okay, but it hates the hills. I need the V8. The 6500 lbs it claims to be able to tow is hogwash. Maybe on flat roads with a tail wind... my boat is 3800 lbs and the V6 struggles up steep hills.
