Oh, no trouble at all. Ah, here it is, you're wrong.

Ladies and gentlemen of the court, if it pleases you may I submit to you the following from the South Carolina Code:

South Carolina Code 56-5-1810. Drive on the right side of roadways; exceptions

South Carolina Code > Title 56 > Chapter 5 > § 56-5-1810 - Drive on the right side of roadways; exceptions

    (a) Upon all roadways of sufficient width a vehicle shall be driven upon the right half of the roadway except as follows: 1. When overtaking and passing another vehicle proceeding in the same direction under the rules governing such movement.
    2. When an obstruction exists making it necessary to drive to the left of the center of the highway. Any person so doing shall yield the right-of-way to all vehicles traveling in the proper direction upon the unobstructed portion of the highway within such distance so as not to constitute an immediate hazard.
    3. Upon a roadway divided into three marked lanes for traffic under the rules applicable thereon.
    4. Upon a roadway restricted to one-way traffic.
    (b) Upon all roadways any vehicle proceeding at less than the normal speed of traffic at the time and place and under the conditions then existing shall be driven in the right-hand lane then available for traffic or as close as practicable to the right-hand curb or edge of the roadway, except when overtaking and passing another vehicle proceeding in the same direction or when preparing for a left turn at an intersection or into a private road or driveway.
    (c) Upon any roadway having four or more lanes for moving traffic and providing for two-way movement of traffic, no vehicle shall be driven to the left of the center line of the roadway, except when authorized by official traffic-control devices designating certain lanes to the left side of the center of the roadway for use by traffic not otherwise permitted to use such lanes, or except as permitted under item 2 of subsection (a). This subsection shall not be construed as prohibiting the crossing of the center line in making a left turn into or from an alley, private road or driveway.

Doesn't take much if they are following close. They are the ones who are not in control of their vehicles. I used a wrong word. I have never "slammed' on the brakes implying a lock up. You don;t need to slam on your brakes if they are close enough to endanger you and travelling at 65 MPH. Ususally a decent tap will send the message. If they are not paying attention they will get all floppy and yeah One time the guy ended up in the median to avoid contact. HE WAS THAT CLOSE.

Its not a "goal" it can be a result. Not my choice there.

I'm guessing you are happy he didn't hit someone head on. Perhaps my friend or your's, since we both live here.

    Come on man.

I won't deny that I've purposefully slowed down to match the speed of the person in the right-hand lane if I'm getting tailgated...good for a quick laugh as they pass you and flick you off once they get the chance.

News to me.... definitely not enforced here. Speed limits are though in any lane. Following too close is...In any lane.

    Yup....
 Then stay out of the left lane unless you are trying to pass a slower vehicle in front of you!!!!! :der:

Don't just do this when you "see a sign" either.... It's a general principle that promotes safety and harmony on the roads.
:ohsnap: But good point... that is a very real possibility.

I think it could also be said, in court, that passing should be done at the speed limit. The law isn't saying if everyone is traveling at 85MPH, in a 55MPH zone, you can pass someone in the left lane at 100MPH. That is not logical and against the law.

He would had to be traveling a lot faster to cross the center grass median into on coming traffic. You guys are making a big deal over nothing. Assuming the worse. People should not be tailgating Period. No excuse, no reason, ESPECIALLY if you cannot move over fast enough for them. This is exactly what I am referring to. They are 10 feet off my six. I am already travelling 65 MPH and cannot move right to the 60MPH lane so ........you better have full control of your vehicle because you will get a brake check that may send you flopping around your lane or worse.

This is what it says: "any vehicle proceeding at less than the normal speed of traffic at the time and place"

Yeah its the law and I thank the poster for the heads up, but that is not relevant when there is no alternative and it is obviously not being enforced. Both lanes of travel are ALWAYS being used here on all freeways.

The "normal" speed of traffic here IS the speed limit. NEVER 80MPH...The local LEOS don't screw around with Speeders.

The right hand laws certainly do not condone speeding. But if you are traveling slower than traffic in the right lane or slowing up traffic in the left lane you need to get over whenever reasonable.

...like killing innocent people in an adjacent lane behind you when the checked driver swerves violently in surprise and loses control and hits them. Again, well done. You are a model citizen.
