Why do I keep seeing rice burners with CNC'd tow hooks in the rear?

I've seen it more than a few times - little rice burner'd out civics and similar cars with shiny, CNC'd tow hooks coming from up underneath the frame to behind the rear bumper. They're always a closed loop.

They don't look to have an actual function, but must be symbolic of something. Anyone know what they're for?

More than likely just for looks in this case. Symbolic for being a ricer.

its a recovery point for when they track their cars. If they crash, the recovery crews use that tow point to tow them off the track. They usually have an arrow that point to the tow hook.

there are definitely posers who pretend like they race and get towed, but it does serve a real purpose

    Boxster, lots. Supra, none.
Wow, this is a really old thread but usually appears first when doing a Google search for Toyota Supra tow hooks.
I regularly track my Boxster and maybe my Supra (Boxster is track prepped, Supra isn't), but I plan on autcrossing the crap out of the Supra.
Every single track event, regardless of sponsor, requires at least a front tow hook so they can tow you if you go off the track.
This is much better for the car than the alternative.
Whether you drive into a wall at Laguna Seca or make a big cloud of dust in the desert, the rationale is the same. Get the car safely off the track with minimum damage to the vehicle.
I am required to have one on my Boxster but technically don't need one on the Supra until I track it, but it does look cool.
The new Supra comes with a 1 year NASA membership and a free track day so I may need the tow hook for it sooner than later.
Then again, neither car qualifies as a "Ricer"
