Most people around here have the attitude of "f--- you, I'm going first". This is fine if I can actually see them about to cross directly behind me while I am backing out of a parking space. However, with a loaded work vehicle or with a camper shell that has multiple windows covered in rain drops, it can be impossible or very questionable to see people coming from the side as I am backing up. If I back in, I can see what's in the space that I might need to avoid hitting before I back up and I can block traffic long enough to line it up and park. Then there is no risk of getting clobbered by some jackass in a Mercedes G wagon when I go to leave.

Our company policy now is to back in or pull through whenever possible.

Got into the habit in the military. Been driving a company vehicle for 15 years and we are required to back in or pull through a spot so we can see when we are leaving.

Oh and it irritates the wife to!:D

Why do you like to drive into a parking space?

I back both my vehicles into parking spots. It's safer that way. I can count on two hands the number of times I have pulled into my driveway in 8 years.

I have just passed the space and verified that no one is in there. Pulling out is safer because I only have to pull out a little to see if anyone is coming vs backing out and being 3/4 the way out before being able to see people / vehicles coming.

I, like some others here, got into the habit when backing fire trucks/ambulances into their bays in the station. I live in a cul-de-sac and like being able to get out quickly for a fire call.
Also I have a backup camera that assists greatly, I feel so high tech. :D

In Hong Kong, driver instructors teach you to back into a parking space and in most parking lots/ structures you will see 99% cars backed in.

its easier to leave a place and when the truck is parked that way, it cuts about a foot of the line leaving your truck sticking out about the same amount as every other car around you

at least in my case with a DC/LB

I don't know if I'm the only one who has thought of this...but it seems to me that people with trucks are more likely to back into to parking spaces. There's no scientific data to back me up, but just from my observations in various parking lots, I tend to see more trucks backed in.

being a volunteer fireman makes me do it, when that call comes in it is time to go, not waste time backing up !

Its much safer when your going to leave. Sometimes its hard to see if theres a car going straight at you while backing out.
