How about the rear. Is it a box or bed or pan or dump? Where I grew up it was commonly called a pan. Got a nice ring to it. "Throw it in the pan of the truck"!

That's a tractor! Tractor and Trailer, get your terms correct. :)

Friend's Dad was an independent long-haul trucker. Hence the terms, she would correct me when I used truck (I think Truck implies the tractor is hooked up to the trailer).

    I'll take a coke!

Here's another one. In the east, Ladder trucks north of the Mason Dixon line are Ladder Companies and south of the Mason Dixon they are called Truck Companies.

Damn... I knew we are seriously divided as Americans and now I wake up to this! It's even worse than I thought.

Nah. The grits line is further south. Scrapple separates the two. Funny never had grits growing up in Maryland.

The same reason people in northern Ohio call it "pop" instead of soda. :)

Just don't call it a 'rig'

One legend that I heard was that the word 'pickup' was used by fleet managers to describe the smaller trucks that were used for just the purpose, pickups. You wouldn't send your duce and a half on local runs. Therefore it became known as a pickup truck. Of course no one knows for sure, but that make sense.

I will say that much like the ignorant and flat billers that call 'wheels', 'rimz', the other thing that annoys me is when people call their Highlander a truck.

I grew up outside of Dayton, we all called it "pop", too.

Figures it would be Ohio that lead the word "pickup".

Anyway, interesting bit of history on American dialects:

I'll second this. Nothing makes me cringe more than hearing someone refer to their pickup truck or jeep or 4Runner as a "rig".....

I refer to my Tacoma as a pickup or truck or pickup truck. I mainly refer to it as a pickup truck in any off road groups I'm a part of. Especially on the 10000 posts titled "post your rig!" or "post your rig, im looking for ideas and dont know how to use a search bar or just look at photos quietly", usually posted by the new guy.

I call mine a car most the time. Really grinds people’s gears in the pickup truck community.
