I think many people are confused here.

My friend has a 2003 Tacoma 4x4 with NO button. It has auto locking hubs.

All 2001+ Tacoma's have auto locking hubs. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Could the button be for rear diff lock or something?

Button says "4WD" on it. I think this is shift on the fly 4WD HI button.

I can't believe no one on here knows for sure. :p

    This is all I found.

Auto-locking hubs and a 4WD-High button let you shift on the fly at speeds less than 50 mph. The shift-on-the-fly button also lets you slip into 4-High when a good road goes bad.

    Thanks that means sense.

I rather get the one without the 4WD button. I think the more "manual" the better.

Agreed on the mechanical vs electronic. The former is better off road IMO, it is also much easier to fix, because one doesn't have to go mess around with any stupid computers or electronics.

I prefer manual operation (manual hubs, manual transmission, and older truck = less electronics).

As for traction control, it may be a great and safe invention, but it won't replace good driving in the first place. People should stop relying on cars to save them and just learn how to drive.

I hear you can buy a chrome skull shift knob on ebay that says 4wd on it. I'm sure that would help your dilemma.

I have automatic with lever/button 2001 sr5. It says your able to engage H4 while going under 62mph, but it always makes this loud "shifting" noise. Is that normal? I'm thinking it is but it just sounds bad so I always throw it in neutral and then push the 4wd button and then put it in drive again. I did that for the past week and it did great in 15inch of snow. So Im wondering if that loud shifting "bump" noise is normal?

    Thanks

Ive heard it on my previous truck. What I noticed was if I was driving and then put it in 4 it would thump into 4 wheel the first time. After that I could take it in and out anytime with no thump. Since I bought my 04 Ive never taken it in and out of 4 while driving.

Does it make a difference if its a v6 or 4 banger?
Pardon my ignorance as my first gen. (98) was a 2wd four banger, so I'm not knowledgeable about the packages or equip on the first gen. 4x4s

from what i understand is the pushbutton was avail on "limited" trim lines from 01-04 and essentially its an electronic shifter similar to the new tacomas whereas most of the 1st gen 4x4s have a manual jshifter

i have never used a push button shifter...however i'm guessing you press the button to engage and then move the shifter to choose between 4hi and 4lo...

that is right, my 03 trd off-road is not an actual "limited" model, which I have seen with the badging and such, but on my insurance based on the VIN, it states limited. I DO have the push button and I like it alot. I am not a hardcore off roader so I am not worrying about breaking it under harsh conditions. Plus its great for the wife "How do I put it in 4wd?" "Just push the button baby and the green symbol comes on on the dash."
