Yeah...I think we should all conclude that Toyota just put the button in some trucks, and put the lever in others. For no reason whatsoever.

Whichever is better is your preference.

The one-touch 'Hi 4' or '2-4' selector switch (and the associated electrical shifting mechanism) was a standalone option during the 1995.5 - 2004 model years.

During the 1998 - 2000 period it was available only on the Limited V6 XtraCab model grade.

During the 2001 - 2004 period it was available only on V6 4X4 XtraCabs and Double Cabs, and it required the Power Package (power windows / locks, which were standard on the 1998 - 2000 V6 Limiteds).

I don't have options documentation specific enough to tell what model(s) or grade(s) this feature was offered on during the 1995.5 - 1997 period.

From top to bottom, it's Lo, N, Hi. If you didn't do the 2Lo mod, putting the shifter into Lo will automatically put the truck in 4WD, even if the button isnt pressed. Not sure if it goes back into 2WD if you put it in Hi though.

The button allows the 4WD to be shifted on the fly below 62 MPH/100 KPH. Models with the button are equipped with the ADD (Auto Disconnect Differential), there are no front locking hubs. All of the engagement is in the differential, the axles just pass through the front spindles to drive the front wheels. To shift between Hi-N-Lo the truck needs to be stopped. Models with the lever shifter have to be stopped before shifting between 2WD-4WD and from Hi-N-Lo, and are usually equipped with auto-locking front hubs.

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
    Yes, thats normal.
Negative. The truck does not need to be stopped with lever shifters for 2wd to 4wd engagement. They came equiped with the same ADD. This started in 98.

Takes 2 min to get 2Lo. Theres a plug near the TCase (iirc) on the drivers side that you just unplug.

My truck has auto locking hubs, and I have the button on the side of the AWD shifter, it is also a 5spd.

i'm pretty sure the automatics have the button type and the 5 speeds have the lever type. not totally sure but my 99 sr5 has the lever type and my roommate's 96 4runner automatic has the button type. instead of pulling the lever back to get into 4hi, you just push the button. you only have to move the lever to get to 4lo. i know its not a taco but its prob the same.
