I just bought a 2020 TRD OR 2WD. I guess I'm just a "poser" but I like the way it rides (better than my 2016 SR5) and looks (rims and black fender flares). I'll tell you how much of a f***ing poser I am...I just installed a TRD skid plate and my truck won't even see a dirt road if I can help it!

Addendum: I should have added to this post originally...I also have a 2019 Kubota 850 Sidekick. It has 4WD, locking rear differential and a 4500 lb. winch. I can go places my OR (even if it had 4WD) can't go. However they recommend you don't go into water over 3 feet...so i guess I'm not a 100% "poser".

I’m off road all the time without putting it into 4wd. When I need it, I engage. To be honest, unless I get hung up on something, 4wd isn’t used much. But I want it, of course, for when I DO need it.

A co-worker of mine bought an 04 sight unseen not knowing the TRD OR came in 2wd. He didn't tell me until it arrived. :smack:

:anonymous: I bought it because the dealer had it 2k under kbb and I was planning to upgrade anyways.

First of all: nothing wrong with being a poser. One beautiful thing about being a free adult is the ability to live however I want without giving a sh!t what others think.

That being said, I'm with the OP. When it comes to trucks and the type of offroad I associate with, it's 4WD or bust. If you're desert racing or other 2WD centric sports, it's not that important. But for me, I won't even consider a truck/SUV without a front axle.

And I say unto the proud bunch who always resort to "I can outdo anyone in my 2WD.": You aren't doing anything nearly as fun as the rest of us. Enjoy your Home Depot hauler.

To save $2k and not get a 4WD? If you end up getting stuck in some remote place and need a professional recovery, there goes your savings.

I rarely use my 4WD but I think of it the same way I think of guns......Just in case. Better to have them and hope you never need them......

I had a 91(92?) and a 2002 that were two wheel drive. Driven by economics and being broke. Winters were a bitch. Ended up doing studded tires on the rear every year with lots of weight.

My last two have been four wheel drive. I hear the argument about truck height on a prerunner but I'd rather get a bone stock 4x4 then a trd 2 wheel drive...

Think about it this way maybe, and I did say maybe. Some folks pic their mate for their looks more so than what they can or cannot do. I know cause I have test drove some really nice looking ones. Ha ha, But I like the stance of the TRD and OR a whole lot more than the others. And that is just my Ole 2 cents.:D

    Bunch of different mods
Don't take things too literally. "Sport" is not suitable for racing, it is just a name of a package. To use it for actual sport, like racing, you'd have to heavily mod it.

Same as "off-road" , it is only a package name. To actually use it for serious off-roading, you need to add a few mods.

Think of those package names as you would think of colour names. When you buy "army green" , you are not actually signing up for military duty, are you.

    Edit:
Having said that, I am not surprised that a "2wd off road" would confuse a few people, but it is only a name

I agree with you 100%. To start, the tires that come on the TRD"off road" are just sad. They are just rebadged street tires. The skid plates are pathetic, and the exhaust hangs too low.
