They do in diesel like the D4D but not in the states. Build a land cruiser or hilux through Toyota Australia, flatbeds, snorkels, bumpers are all options. http://www.toyota.com.au/suvs-4wds
Small displacement diesel would be awesome but they won’t do it here for a long time if ever

I like my power train in my 3rd Gen. I also drive a Ford F-350 I nickname “the guzzler”. The Ford is comfy, and drives nice with lots of power, but goes half the distance for twice the gas. I bought my Tacoma because the places I drive for pleasure, there isn’t a gas station on every corner, and I don’t want to tow a tanker trailer full of fuel.

Thank you Toyota for making fuel efficient, capable and compact 4x4s and not pandering to the people who just want big power at any cost. This camper appreciates it!

I've seen very little in terms of engine problems from other small displacementt turbocharged engines.
Hell Toyota had the supra engines which were famous for turbocharged reliability.

You obviously haven’t seen the massive ecoboost engine failures, I would know first hand.

exactly, theEcoboost engine has all kinds of issues, while the FoundOnRoadDead truck kicks the can at 40k miles my under powered rusty framed, howling rear Toyota will be clocking over 200k without blinking an eye.

Here is the true answer. The engines themselves are sound, and there is a lot of power being held back from them and the trannies. The issue is that the actual factory tuning is trash and holding these powertrains back from their true potential. There is a lot of torque management being misused from the transmission end, and the factory tune allows for a very dirty running engine.

I just got finished driving an all stock 05 Tacoma. This thing knocks and pings so much it is absolutely disgusting... no check engine light for the trash running condition either. Nice Toyota. This is not an isolated condition either. My 2012 which was all factory at the time knocked and pinged a bunch at acceleration also. Octane used never mattered, nor did brand. This tells me their tuning is 100% at fault here. (Fuel pump also on the 2nd gens as well)

The truth is you can have plenty of power and a firm yet smooth shifting vehicle which is capable of putting down the desirable power these vehicles are holding back. All the while, maintaining and even going above what federal emissions standards are for these engines/ trucks. You CAN have your cake and eat it also. Toyota likes to play it safe and have been for years though. In the end the only one getting hosed here is the end consumers. I'll never figure out their logic for setting up their trucks this way.

AND it continues with the 3rd gen. Not that they ping/knock, but there's definitely power left on the table along with bi-polar auto tranny programming. Enter OVtune with a shot of penicillin. It's not perfect yet, but much better than the OEM calibration in my M/T.

More like shot of natural adrenaline.

Yeah the 3rd gen is a totally different animal on it's own because of the Otto Atkinson motor using DI tech.. it's not surprising that they lanes down the overall tuning on the truck at all. Not to mention the plethora of other issues which continually plague them which could had been avoided in the first place.

In all honesty, I would still have bought a 3rd gen if it had the 4.0 (preferably the dual VVTI T4R engine). I just couldn't get past the looks of the 2nd gen, inside and out. Dated tech, weirdly big fender flares and the over done arch in the wheel wells. Buggy eyed headlights. Yep, the nose of the 3rd gen is also over done but I can live with that. Don't have a hissy fit 2nd genners.

It is probably the 6 speed auto causing everyone's anguish. I have never driven a 6 speed auto that I liked. The F250 I use for work has a 6 speed auto, and even with a V8, it seems to gear hunt excessively and when I don't want it to. I can't stand when it drops two gears when I am just going up a slight hill, or when it upshifts two gears when I am about to accelerate out of a turn.
