TBH, the engine isn't that simple, it's "simply" over engineered to be less powerful. Toyota opted for longevity versus increased power. Having a large displacement v6 does help power wise though in the low end.
On top of my 07 Taco, I also have a 17' lariat 3.5 ecoboost. I expect that engine to last probably up to 100k miles being it is the 2nd generation 3.5 eco and minor reliability improvements were made while increasing boost to up the torque by 50ftlbs and some hp. I think my turbos will fail before the block does. Ford built the 2.7 and 3.5 blocks well and used only forged components.

I can't speak for the auto trans guys and the problems with the 6-speed, but I CAN tell you a big part of the weirdness also lies with engine management (garbage OEM calibration). Pre-tune, my M/T had sluggish response and super delayed throttle. Dangerous bog off the line and weird acceleration delay when getting back into the throttle after an upshift. Now, add that to the auto tranny...

Edit: *They won't go down this road in their trucks*

Because they are smart enough to stay away from forced induction to falsify numbers and remove themselves from the longevity question doing so

Fair enough, but specifically what is going wrong with the Ford Ecoboost engines?

If you are a Ford employee and don't want to risk it, I understand.

I agree. The Supra TT was a powerful engine for it's size but no one bought it for it's reliability.

I believe Lexus is using Forced Induction on the 3.5, they must have decided to falsify numbers and remove themselves from longevity.

It is a well known fact ford lies about the MPG obtained by the ecoboost, this is what I am referring to. If it’s soooooo good why didnt they put it in the Tacoma?

It’s true, I test drove one before I bought my Taco. Decent power and nice 6MT, but no 4x4 meant it wasn’t really in the running. Pretty spartan interior and man I don’t like the way they look. That spare tire sticking down looks like a dog with a big turd stuck in its fur.
