Why do toyota's powertrains suck?

None of this matters. The Toyota will run forever and hold the best value. Doesn't matter if it isn't the best at everything.

I keep leaving Toyota, and always come back because of how shitty other manufacturers are. Nissan is second in my book.

That being said, anybody have any info on the new Wrangler Pickup with a diesel.

This is my 5th Toyota Pickup - and easily the best one. Now keep in mind that I have never owned a truck with an Automatic (and likely never will). With 40,000 my my Taco-Sport I am sold and would, if this were totaled, order the same thing. The 3.5 is, admittedly, different. But once you learn the engine, and understand that the Tach is not just a decoration...You will love it too. Unfortunately we live in a world where owners are happy to leave all the ratio-selecting to others and then bitch about it. Yes, I do downshift 2 cogs on occasions...If you want power, you (Manually) select the ratio that puts the Engines RPM where the power is. Use the Tach- Stop shifting by ear! If you want a slow speed engine with oodles of low in Torque- Buy a Diesel from GM.

The OP is thinking about it the wrong way. The diesel Canyon is 47k or more. The one at my dealer had some ugly XD rims on it and some other junk. They wanted over 50k. Right.... Buy a new Tacoma TRD Off-Road for 37k, and spend that 13 large on it. Or if you want it all turn key, a loaded TRD Pro with a dealer installed SC is slightly less than the stock Canyon. Either way you have a better truck than a Canyon and it won't depreciate as much.

Part of the appeal of the Taco is that you can find aftermarket parts galore. Nissan makes a decent truck in the Frontier but it doesn't have near the aftermarket support that a Taco has. You're also buying proven reliability. Whatever you decide, I seriously doubt coming into Tacoma World and asking why Toyota powertrains "suck" is a good idea.

2019 MY is the debut of the Jeep Ecodiesel. The truck is due in late 2019. The Jeep diesel is said to do 260 hp and 442 lb/ft. Not too shabby. The Canyon does 181 hp and 369 lb/ft. Jeep has been busy lately, and that Wrangler truck looks cool. The Hellcat powered Grand Cherokee makes 707 hp and does a sub 12 second 1/4. I'm guessing it's a lot of sport and not much utility, but it sounds cool.

The appeal of Tacomas and Toyota is that they don't pretend to be something they're not. They don't pretend to be luxurious rides. They don't pretend to be race cars. They take a base of a car, slap on what's necessary, make sure it works forever and can handle anything. No faux leather, no huge or turbocharged engines, no crazy new tech. It just does what you tell it to do. I absolutely love the minimalistic styling of Toyotas, to me they age better than the latest new features and they don't fail often. It's intriguing how the perception of "Trucks" have changed. Growing up I always viewed them as workhorses durable beasts but in the past years they've really become status symbols. Suddenly luxurious features and speed matter. I'm personally very happy Toyota never succumbed to competitive pressure. This doesn't mean their cars are perfect, but they "work" and it's a sad state in the car market where we can't even be confident a lot of cars just work.

Sorry OP, Toyota powertrains are always going to "suck". They're always going to be unfashionable and reliable.

I assume that Volvo doesn’t have direct injection? Most current FI cars use direct injection which seems to be a reason why realiability decreases

The 3rd gen powertrain is by far my favorite and I've had a 3.4 4Runner, and a 4.0 2nd Gen Taco.

Resale is king and Toyota smokes the rest.

Amen! Maybe the OP wants/needs a Raptor. They are popular in my neck of the woods. It feels like you are driving the Enterprise. Same with the Super Duty. There are more lights and switches than you find in some aircraft. Moreover, every time you turn it on the Ford logo drops into the dirt. Why? I know what I bought. Do I need to be reminded every time I turn the key? They call it the Productivity Screen. I have a productivity screen. It's on the MacBook Pro, and it even posts to Tacoma World!

The one my friend bought came with the extra special feature where the frame bends if you try to drive it like Ford suggests it can be driven. He got it fixed by Ford and bought a Tundra with a supercharger. The Tundra doesn't pretend to extend the size of your manhood, but it runs awesome and hasn't failed him yet.

    Bottomline
3rd gen just as fast as 2nd in 0-60 and tows faster than 2nd. 18% more hp.
2nd gens are disappearing (frame not included lol) as we speak. Old tech out new in. Get use to it.
2nd gens look like they have flux caps installed somewhere in there.
    Bye bye 2nd gens.

I'm quite happy with my 4.0L 6spd Frontier.

-No clatter, it's smooth and quiet.
-Stock exhaust and intake sound nice
    -Quick throttle response
    -No lack of power

Well that is your problem. The automatic cuts the balls off the 3.4. With the 5-speed, they are great. I towed my little trailer and a full bed of camping gear and crap all over the Sierra with the 5-speed, and it was a joy. Then, when we were going to have a kid I test drove the automatic DC up one steep highway grade, empty, and said WTF, fuck this, it's got zero balls and it's a short bed too. I guess I need to get a 2nd gen. It had to be a DCLB, which only came with an auto, but the engine is great and the AT is not bad, coming from someone who has never had anything but manuals for 35 years. Snapped up one of the very last new 2015s before I got hosed.

    Jeep is Chrysler. Chrysler sucks.
Chrysler bought jeep name years ago because they never made a good vehicle. Never will. Just look at the badged liberty.
They couldn't make it, so they bought the name.
    Smart people know the difference.

I was just answering the man's question. My ex-girlfriend had a 4 door Rubicon. The seats aren't very comfortable for taller people like myself, and thought the fit and finish was lacking. Some people love them, and different strokes, but I got over my Jeep phase during my undergrad years. I'm shopping for a SUV now and the late GX 470 early GX 460 seems to be the ticket. During the Wyoming winter with bad roads and vast expanses between towns I want the reliability of a Toyota. Which brings me back to the OP's question. It might not have all the bells and whistles, but you're also much less likely to walk home.

/sigh Have we discussed this before??

I bought the truck for reliability and resale value. Time will tell if the third gen is similar to the second gen by those metrics. I find the interior nice, the ride nice and like the off-road capability. I find the power-train adequate and if I get tired of 2 shifts on every hill at 75+ mph I go to S5. I love getting 20-24 mpg on my commute. I don't need a class 2 truck, the Colorado is ugly as puck and the Nissan doesn't offer a locker and the 90s keep calling asking for it back. Maybe the 'new' Ranger will be awesome but it wasn't a choice when I bought my Taco.

Are over computerized CAFE/emissions regulation compliant engines going to be as reliable as the fabled bulletproof Asian engines from the 90s? I doubt it...too much solid state stuff made with cheap self destructing Chinese capacitors. Will my Taco last longer and be easier/cheaper to repair than the other light truck options? That is what I am banking on. Ask me in 5 years and again at 10.

The bold statement is the money quote. Will Chrysler ever spend serious money on proper engineering, quality parts sourcing and manufacturing techniques? They make some nice looking vehicles but nothing sold in North America has worse reliability except maybe Tesla. There is nowhere to go but up from the bottom yet they fail to do so every year. Jeeps have some phenomenal off-road capability stock, especially the Rubicon. The cabins are garbage though for a daily driver (noise, comfort, technology). But who would buy one knowing it's going to need minor repairs every 25k miles and major repairs every 50k?

    PS The Compass isn't a 'Jeep' it's a crossover.

I see a lot of them, used, at the local lots. And they don't seem to move quickly once they arrive. Lots of faux beadlocks and MT tires. I suppose they look tough, but the cab noise is far greater even with mild tires. I'm guessing that their owners gave up on the hum and heavy steering after a few years.

From one tall guy (6'9") to another, how tall are you?
