Why do toyota's powertrains suck?

Ambling into the 3rd Gen section to state virtually nothing of value then run off:

My work truck is a 2012 F150 3.5L Ecoboost with 185K miles, and it's had anything but an easy life (quarry truck with an assload of highway time thrown in). It sees regular preventative maintenance and hasn't given me a single powertrain issue. Some of the electronics are starting to suffer (Blutooth/entertainment system) but the truck still runs like stink. Granted, this is the only one data point and the only Ecoboost engine I have any familiarity with, so take it for what it's worth. Though at this point if anything does happen to the engine it will probably totaled and replaced rather than repaired.

Yeah doesnt mean much because like you said, its a data point of one. I had a friend in college who had a 2001 chevy cavalier with over 200k miles and never gave him problems.... but doesn't change the fact that 2000's chevy cavaliers are a shit car. Helped a friend replace his blown head gasket in his late 90s corolla (barely had 100k miles too).... but its still pretty much the most reliable car to ever exist. That's why you have to look outside of anecdotes. Depreciation, wholesale values, and which vehicles are chosen for fleet duty are much better indicators of overall dependability.

Fact is if it was a solid vehicle police departments nationwide wouldn't be dumping it left and right like they are right now after ordering them for only 4 years. It isn't just the lower reliability either, ALL the ford police units got recalled last year from faulty fuel pumps that were leaving cops stranded.

Not to mention the carbon monoxide poisoning (watch for a recall to come out next year on this, Ford is delaying it):
    http://www.detroitnews.com/story/business/autos/ford/2017/08/09/ford-police-suv-update/104429516/

I'd also bet dollars to donuts the NA V8s in the F150s are more reliable than the turbo 3.5s.

Not arguing the overall statement, but just adding an anecdote of virtually no value, as noted in my post. And yeah, solid point on the merits of individual cases and outliers compared to the average. Every company makes good and bad vehicles - some to a greater extent than others - and every run inevitably has examples that fall above or below representative standard deviation.

I wasn't aware of the fleet vehicle issues. Much appreciated, gives me something else to look into. While my truck in particular has been fantastic, I'm only driving it because it's what was issued by my employer. Who knows what the next one will be when this one inevitably rotates out.

Should have kept the 6.2 and thrown an S/C on it for the Raptor, called it good. Nice truck, no fucking way that I, meaning me, would ever pay 70+ grand for a truck with an unreliable 6 cylinder. Don't give a shit if they strap 6 hairdryers on it.

I used to enjoy reading internet arguments and debates. But really all it is now (especially evidenced in this thread) is a bunch of people typing in argument buzzwords they learned on huffpost.

Time to make my build page!
There is a Roush 6.2 Raptor one town over. Owner is pretty cool. He said he took it Arizona and could pass anything but a gas station. He says he doesn't off-road it much because he's got so much money wrapped up in it. Either way, Ford is addressing the Spinal Tap (goes to 11) mindset with that truck. I'm sure that segment thinks two turbos are better than two more cylinders. And having 10 speeds in the tranny!? Reliability be damned, they want whatever is newest and the coolest.

Yes, you can get a stick shift Colorado, but only as a bare-bones base model. It's only available as a 2WD extra cab with the 4-banger, and the "G80" locking rear differential is not available...

You have to upgrade from Base WT to get the locker, and a manual transmission is unavailable.

My take on that is if you got the cheese to drop 70 k+ on a rig, you should have the cheese to feed it. Keep the turbos, give me 2 more cylinders.

Two turbos is better than 2 more cylinders in this case... The 3.5 HO TT destroys the 6.2 as far as performance goes. I mean it does sound like a Honda lawn mower, but so do these Tacoma’s lol

Have to agree to disagree. I don't think that motor is all it is being made out to be by Ford. Time will tell. Still think an all aluminum S/C 6.2 would justify the price.

I used to daily a 6.2 raptor for a little bit... I can promise you that the 3.5 HO is badass. In fact, a supercharged 6.2 vs a 3.5tt HO tuned is still a close race.

But will it run for 200K miles? Is it going to eat turbos? It might perform better now, but it's an unknown as far as longevity and reliability goes. And from what I saw that Rousch SC 6.2 will eat the 3.5 TT and shit out a Prius. But I'm not spending 70K+ to find out. Or 40K to buy a used 6.2 that someone has rodded the cat shit out of.

** The only SC Raptor I have seen is a 2014 Rousch Stage 2. Rousch claims an extra 179hp and 156 lb-ft for a total of 590 & 590. The one I saw also ran a Snow H2O/Methanol injection and a slightly smaller pulley to help compensate for our altitude. The second-generation Raptor 3.5L EcoBoost V6 engine has 450 horsepower and 510 lb.-ft. of torque
