You need to be stopped or under 5 mph to "operate DFF LOCK" (which is the name of the button). Once in Locked Mode there is no speed limit for its operation. HOWEVER, since it is in the Tacoma to get unstuck, and has no other purpose from Toyota... Just how fast do you need to drive to get out of being stuck?

That 'kids' are playing with their Toys, being unsafe, and flipping them while locked will just cause Toyota to discontinue offering the factory locker. When both rear tires are locked together, steering is much affected since one tire needs to rotate more than another in a turn. Okay on soft off-road surfaces where the one tire can slip... but if on dry pavement or firm surfaces, the truck will not turn easily... and if going fast, could cause you to hit something you intended to miss.

A-TRAC provides the traction ability of rear (and front) lockers but frees-up when not needed, like in turns... no need to turn it on and off to negotiate tight, turning trails... but when you lose traction on any of the 4 tires, A-TRAC goes "active" and transfers power to just the traction tires.
